U16 BKYL Final

Killen 1 – 1 B’mallard aet. (Killen win on pens.)

Killen completed the U16 League and Cup double with this hard fought victory at Omagh Youth Sport on Friday night. Killen began strongly and continued to dominate most of the first half. Andrew Nevin was out quickly to dive at the feet to deny a Killen striker in the opening minutes but both keepers were to have a quiet night as defences were on top throughout the game. Keelan McAleer and ‘Man of the Match’ Graham Young for Killen were in control in midfield but the Mallards almost took the lead against the run of play when a wild slice by a Killen defender saw the ball strike his own crossbar and out to safety. On the stroke of half time Nevin made a point blank save following a goalmouth scramble.

In the second half the Mallards settled and began to create chances. Johnny Hoy broke free but his cross was smothered by the keeper, Matthew Woods headed over from a Lee Walker corner and Charlie Mitten speculative shot from 25 yards just missed the upright. Killen were also creating half chances but despite both teams endeavour the game went to extra time.

The Mallards broke the deadlock in the first period with Walker, Louis Leonard and Bryan Owens exchanged passes in midfield eventually finding Ruairi Corrigan 30 yards out. He beat a player and struck an unstoppable angled right foot shot into the top corner to leave the keeper with no chance. The Mallards appeared comfortable at this stage and Woods had a goal bound header cleared but with four minutes of the second period remaining Killen equalised when Nathan Milligan got on the end of a cross to powerfully head home to send the game to penalties.
Killen won the resulting shoot out with John Edgar the only scorer for the Mallards.

Dergview 2 - 4 Ballinamallard Youth 18.09.09 Semi Final

Dergview got of to a flying start in this entertaining game when their a long clearance from Dergview keeper Martin Mongan was missed by the Mallards defence and Dean Catterson lobbed the ball over Andrew Nevin into the empty net. Within 5 minutes Andrew Farrell got the equaliser after good play from Ruairi Corrigan and Charlie Mitten. Both Mitten and Corrigan forced Mongan into fingertip saves but Dergview regained the lead when a low ball into the penalty area was flicked into the net by Catterson for his second. The Mallards regained parity when Corrigan set up Farrell whose shot was parried but Mitten made no mistake from 6 yards. Just before the break Farrell struck the post and John Edgar shot narrowly over but the entertaining half ended 2 – 2.

Dergview opened the second half brightly and a dangerous low cross/shot just missed the upright with the Mallard defence struggling. With 15 minutes gone Mallards took the lead when a lee Walker free kick was met by Corrigan who finished clinically to make the score 3 - 2. For the first time in the game the Mallards took control and Farrell hit the post following a sweeping move involving Corrigan and John Currie. Matthew Woods had a shot from 6 yards brilliantly saved on the line by Mongan who minutes later again denied Farrell. With 10 minutes remaining Currie beat two defenders in the penalty area and laid the ball of to Walker who struck home a fierce shot to secure a 4 – 2 victory and progress to the final against Killen on 9th October.

Lisnaskea 0 – 5 Ballinamallard 04.09.09 Cup Quarter Final

In an evenly contested first 20 minutes both teams played attractive football but without creating any clear cut chances. The opening goal came on 25 minutes when the lively John Currie for the visitors found John Joe Strain on the left and his cross was met by Andrew Farrell who swivelled and drove a left foot shot into the corner. Five minutes later Farrell was brought down in the area and he confidently converted the resulting penalty high into the net. Matthew Woods had a header cleared off the line but just before the break Strain made it 3 – 0 when he latched onto a defensive mistake and his shot, although parried by Robert Wiggins found the net.

The second half began with Lisnaskea dominating possession with James Turley, Colin Kennedy and Ruairi McGrade playing tidy football in midfield but again being unable to threaten the goal. Strain broke free but was denied by a last ditch tackle from Matty Morrison and Lee Walker had a shot well saved but the Mallards got their fourth after a another strong run from Strain. His low cross into the 6 yard box was met by Farrell who scooped home for his hat trick. Despite the scoreline, possession was being evenly shared and Lisnaskea’s McGrade’s almost opened for them but his effort went narrowly over the bar. Mallard’s keeper Andrew Nevin was quickly out at the feet of Andy Little to deny him as the game opened up. Bryan Owens had a 25 yards free kick brilliantly tipped away by the excellent Wiggins but on the stroke of full time Stephen Bruce was upended and Farrell converted to leave the final score 5 – 0.

B’mallard ‘A’ 1 – 6 B’mallard ‘B’ 29.05.09

An under strength ‘B’ team almost took a surprise lead in the opening minute when a defensive mix up let in Adam Wallace but Andrew Nevin redeemed himself to block the resulting shot. The opening 20 minutes was closely fought until Bryan Owens broke the deadlock with a superb 20 yard shot into the roof of the net. Ten minutes later the ‘B’s were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. The resulting kick from Wallace was parried by Nevin in the ‘A’ goal but Ryan Sandford quickly followed up to equalise. Just before the break Johnny Hoy put the ‘A’s back in front with a powerful shot to give keeper Nathan Wallace no chance.

Two goals in the opening 5 minutes in the second half effectively finished the game. Hoy supplied the pass for Andrew Farrell to nudge the ball past Wallace and John Currie set up Hoy for the ‘A’s fourth goal. On 65 minutes Hoy again did well on the left and supplied a perfect pass for Konrad Sak to finish from 6 yards and in the dying minutes Hoy completed his hat trick when he finished from a tight angle.

B’mallard U16 1 – 0 Strathroy Harps 22.05.09

B’mallard edged out a stubborn Harps on Friday night to take 3 valuable points in a bad tempered game with few chances. Most of these were created by the Mallards with the lively John Joe Strain and Johnny Hoy going close on several occasions and at the back Matthew Woods, Louis Leonard and Charlie Mitten were on hand to snuff out any threat. In attack, Woods came close with two headers from set pieces but with the bookings tally rising the halftime score remained 0 – 0.

In the second half the Mallards pressed forward and got their reward on 55 minutes. Ruairi Corrigan collected the ball in midfield and his precision pass found Strain who swivelled past a defender and his sweet left foot shot beat the diving keeper. Mark Wilson was set through but his effort went just wide of the post and Niall Wallace had two shots from distance well saved but there was to be no further scoring.

Mountjoy 6 – 0 B’mallard 15.05.09

B’mallard cruised to a 5 – 0 half time lead with a superb display on Friday night. They opened the scoring following a dazzling run by John Currie and the resulting shot from Ruairi Corrigan was deflected into the net by John Edgar. Matthew Woods headed in from a Charlie Mitten corner and Corrigan made it 3 – 0 when he got on the end of an Adam Davison through ball and smashed the ball just inside the post. Corrigan got his second after receiving the ball following a strong run from Bryan Owens and when Mitten was brought down in the penalty area Corrigan comfortably dispatched the resulting penalty to leave the half time score 5 – 0.

The Mallards continued to dominate possession in the second period but it took until the 60th minute to add to their score. Corrigan took an in swinging corner which was headed on by Owens to Woods, who side footed home from 6 yards. In a rare threat to the Mallard goal, Mountjoy were unlucky to see a header come back off the cross bar but it was the Mallards who continued to create chances. Numerous efforts mostly from Owens and Corrigan went close but the Mallards were unable to add to the scoring to leave the final score 6 – 0.

B’mallard 4 – 0 Fivemiletown 08.05.09

B’mallard were in control of this game from the start and within the opening minutes Lee Walker saw his looping shot tipped onto the bar by the excellent Cameron Crawford who was to have a busy evening. This was quickly followed by further saves from efforts from Ruairi Corrigan, John Joe Strain and Walker as the Mallards domination continued. The Mallards took the lead on 25 minutes when Strain gathered possession on the half way line, his pace took him into the penalty area and he slid the ball past Crawford. Just before the break Corrigan’s goal bound header was well saved by Crawford at the expense of a corner. Johnny Hoy took the corner and this was met with an unstoppable header by Matthew Woods.

It was more of the same in the second half with Crawford and defender Gary Stewart coming to the rescue for Fivemiletown on several occasions. The Mallards made it 3 – 0 on 65 minutes when Walker made a strong run on the right wing and his precision pass was met by Matthew McConkey who placed the ball into the net from 10 yards. Adam Davison was denied by a terrific diving save on the goal line but with 5 minutes remaining John Edgar got on the score sheet with a powerful drive into the corner of the net to leave the final score 4 – 0.

Enniskillen Town 2 – 3 Ballinamallard 01.05.09

B’mallard overcame a stubborn E’killen Town on Friday and but for poor finishing and good goalkeeping the scoreline would have been more emphatic. In the opening 15 minutes Ruairi Corrigan fierce drive struck the crossbar and Joe McGovern made two good saves from John Joe Strain and Mark Wilson. At the other end Andrew Nevin was relieved to see a shot go narrowly over the bar. With 30 minutes gone Strain headed against the bar but minutes later he opened the scoring when he latched onto a through ball from Wilson, rounded McGovern and stroked the ball home. Wilson had a chance to increase the lead before the break but was forced wide by McGovern when one on one.

After the break Andrew Farrell was brought down in the penalty area and he converted the penalty at the second attempt after a fine save from McGovern. The Mallards were pegged back to 2 - 1 following a terrific 25 yards strike from Jody McManus. Despite dominating possession the Mallards were wasteful in front of goal but with 10 minutes remaining they looked to have made the game safe when Strain headed on to Corrigan and his powerful run and shot made it 3 – 1. In the dying minutes Eamonn McCaffrey for Town got on the end of a long ball to deflect the ball past Nevin to leave a nervy end to the game for the Mallards.

Ballinamallard Youth 6 – 0 Dergview 18.04.09

Ballinamallard cruised to a 6 – 0 victory but the opening 10 minutes were dominated by Dergview who had their opponents pinned into their own half but their failure to convert a number of half chances was to prove costly. Following on from his 4 goals last week Johnny Hoy broke the deadlock with a powerfully struck left foot shot from outside the area. Minutes later Dergview were unlucky when a free kick crashed off the Mallard’s bar and away to safety. On 15 minutes Hoy had a header kicked off the line and this was followed by a good save following another Hoy effort. Mark Wilson opened his account with a header from a Ruairi Corrigan cross and Hoy got his second after good interlink play from Andrew Farrell and Wilson as the Mallards cruised to a half time 3 – 0 lead.

Hoy got his hat trick with an exquisite left foot lob from the edge of the penalty area from another Corrigan through ball and on 50 minutes Wilson drove a fierce shot through a packed penalty area to get his second. On 65 minutes he completed his hat trick with a shot into the top corner to round off a fine individual performance. The Mallards had numerous chances to increase the lead with the pick being Lee Walkers shot which was tipped onto the bar. A solid partnership between central defenders Ben Brown and Matthew Woods ensured the Mallards kept another clean sheet and record a 6 – 0 victory.

Ardstraw 2 – 4 B’mallard 10.04.09

In one of the few matches to survive the poor weather B’mallard secured the three points with an impressive display. As expected the opening period was a close affair but the Mallards gained momentum and Johnny Hoy gave an indication of what was to come with two goal bound efforts being blocked and another going just over the bar. Hoy did open the scoring after good work on the left by John Edgar and Bryan Owens and Hoy’s shot had enough power to beat the keeper from 20 yards. Ruairi Corrigan and Hoy again had shots saved but on the stroke of half time Ardstraw got an unlikely equaliser with their first attempt on goal. A free kick was blocked by the Mallard wall but rebounded to an Ardstraw forward and his sweetly struck shot found the top corner.

With 10 minutes gone in the second half the Mallards regained the lead. A flowing move started with Lee Walker deep in his own half and after exchanging passes with Edgar, Andy Farrell was set free on the left and his accurate cross was met by Hoy who netted his second. Farrell had a shot well saved and Edgar hit the post before Hoy nabbed his hat trick on 70 minutes following another flowing move which again involved Edgar and Farrell. Another accurate ball from Farrell from the by line was stroked home by Hoy from 6 yards. It was all B’mallard and when Edgar’s shot was saved the rebound inevitable fell to Hoy who finished well from outside the penalty area. With the last kick of the game Ardstraw got a consolation goal with an unstoppable 20 yard free kick.

BKYL / Mid Ulster Awards

Annual Presentation / BBQ

Hoy.

Windmill Stars 1 – 2 Ballinamallard Youth 18.04.09

B’mallard showed the effects of the previous night’s match with a sluggish first half in which they barely strung a series of passes together. Matthew McConkey came closest with a header over the bar and Johnny Hoy’s shot just missed the upright but Niall Wallace and Adam Davison in defence were constantly under pressure. Windmill opened the scoring when a ball, not properly cleared was hooked over Andrew Nevin and into the net. Nevin made another good save with his feet and John Currie had an effort tipped over but the Mallards were fortunate to enter the break only 1 – 0 down after this dismal performance.

A much improved B’mallard emerged from the break with McConkey again coming close with another header and play being condensed into Windmill’s half with a number of half chances being created. With 5 minutes remaining the Mallards got the deserved equaliser and it was Hoy who maintained his recent scoring streak with a stunning strike from outside the penalty area after good work by Charlie Mitten and Edgar. Some frantic defending from Windmill appeared to have denied the Mallards a victory but in the last minute a Wallace corner was met by Edgar at the back post and his towering header found the net to reward an excellent second half performance.

Moneyslane 3 – 1 B’mallard 28.03.09

Wasteful finishing, especially in the first half led to this surprising defeat to lowly Moneyslane. Following a tight opening 10 minutes the Mallards took control and shots reigned down on the Moneyslane goal. John Edgar, Bryan Owens, Lee Walker and Andrew Farrell all had efforts saved but too often the decisive final ball was missing as good opportunities came to nothing. Owens found the net with a tremendous volley but this was ruled out for offside. With 10 minutes remaining Edgar opened the scoring after a goal keeping error but the expected goal avalanche didn’t come and on the stroke of half time Andrew Nevin pulled off a good save but the ball fell to a opponent who chipped into the open net to score an unlikely equalise.

With the wind at their backs the second half was more even but again the Mallards were creating the chances with Owens having a fierce shot parried, John Currie just failing to connect from close in and Edgar having several shots go narrowly over. With 15 minutes remaining Moneyslane took the lead after a good passing move resulted with the ball being slipped under Nevin from close in. The Mallards were getting into some good position but again wayward shooting and a poor final ball were letting them down. With minutes remaining Moneyslane ensured the 3 – 1 victory with the ball being forced over the line despite a gallant effort from Louis Leonard.

Portadown 2 – 4 B’mallard aet M.U.Cup 21.03.09

B’mallard twice had to come from behind before finally overcoming Portadown in a thrilling Mid Ulster cup match on Saturday. Portadown took the lead on 10 minutes with an unstoppable volley from the edge of the penalty area but within 5 minutes Johnny Hoy levelled from the spot after Andrew Farrell had been brought down by the keeper. There was no further scoring and few chances between the two evenly matched teams before half time.

The Mallards were caught cold on the break seconds after the restart and fell 2 – 1 behind with a well taken goal. For the first time in the game the Mallards dominated play and were unlucky when Konrad Sak’s effort was blocked and John Edgar’s follow up was deflected over the bar. The excellent Ruairi Corrigan hit a free kick over the bar and Farrell’s shot was tipped onto the bar and away to safety as the Mallards pressed for an equaliser. With 10minutes left the ball fell to Edgar who hit a superb strike from 25 yards in off the underside of the bar to level again. Hoy had a shot parried away for a corner and Louis Leonard’s header drifted over but in the final minute Andrew Nevin pulled off a brilliant one handed save to force extra time.

At the start of extra time Portadown wasted a great chance to again take the lead but this would prove to be their last opportunity as the Mallards finished strongly. The lively Farrell gave the Mallards the lead when he latched onto Lee Walker’s pass through the static defence and slotted the ball under the keeper. The Mallards controlled the remainder of the game and Farrell got his second after closing down the hesitant keeper and scrambling the ball home.

B’mallard Yth 5 – 0 Sunnyside 14.03.09.

B’mallard took all 3 points in a windswept game at Dungannon on Saturday. Right from the start the Mallards took control with the midfield of John Currie, Bryan Owens, Andy Farrell and Konrad Sak dominating possession and winning most of the 50/50 balls. Despite this, few clear cut chances were being created and it wasn’t until just before half time that the Mallards got the breakthrough. Farrell and Currie combined well on the left and John Edgar took his chance from the edge of the penalty area to make the half time score 1 – 0.

The Mallards had more of a cutting edge in the second half with Sak setting up Currie for a good finish within minutes of the restart. Lee Walker had a shot headed off the line and Edgar hit a post before the Mallards added a third following a flowing more. Stephen Bruce in midfield passed wide to Mark Glenn whose cross was met by Edgar with a sweet left foot shot. Glenn got on the end of a Johnny Hoy cross to make it 4 – 0 and Edgar secured the 5 – 0 victory and his hat trick in the dying minutes after being put through by Glenn.

B’mallard 0 – 2 Donegal Celtic 28.02.09

Donegal Celtic went into this game at Craigavon as strong favourites against a severely under strength B’mallard team but with 15 minutes gone Celtic had been restricted to a few long range shots. The Mallards were fortunate not to go behind after a glaring miss from a few yards out but gradually grew in confidence and Johnny Hoy almost opened the scoring with a 25 yard free kick which squirmed under the keeper but away to safety. On 25 minutes this bad tempered affair erupted with a Celtic player being sent off for a head butt. Immediately following this a Hoy free kick was met by Niall Wallace whose header went narrowly wide. Bryan Owens shot wide as the Mallards poured forward and Celtic had a second player sent off when Lee Walker was cynically brought down when through on goal. Just before the break Hoy provided a cross from the right but Owens header missed the target.

Five minutes into the second half Hoy’s 30 yard free kick went over the bar but despite the Mallards numerical advantage Celtic came more into the match and scored the opener with a header after poor marking at a corner. The game descended into a messy affair in an increasingly hostile atmosphere and there was a stoppage as Owens needed treatment for a facial injury. Andrew Sheridan in nets made a good block with his feet but with 10 minutes remaining a ball across the Mallard back line was intercepted and a good strike gave Celtic their second which sealed the game. The game also included 3 other yellow cards to Celtic but to their credit the Mallards maintained their discipline.

B’mallard 4 – 1 Moneyslane 14.02.09

B’mallard got back to winning ways after the enforced break with this comprehensive victory over Moneyslane and but for the woodwork the score would have been more emphatic. On 5 minutes the lively Lee Walker shot into the side netting and minutes later he struck the post with a back post header. John Joe Strain and Walker were a constant threat up front and Strain was unlucky when he saw hit 18 yard shot hit the inside of the post and bounce across the goal line and away to safety. Walker again hit the side netting from a difficult angle and Louis Leonard’s header from the impressive Niall Wallace’s delivery just missed the target. With half time approaching the Mallards got the breakthrough when a through ball from Charlie Mitten found Strain and he comfortably beat the last defender and stroked the ball under the out coming keeper.

Seconds after the restart Moneyslane got an unlikely equaliser following a back post header from a corner. Within a minute the lead was restored when Wallace latched onto a goalkeeping mistake to hammer home from 6 yards. On 10 minutes Andy Farrell went narrowly wide and at the other end Andrew Nevin was forced into making his first save of the match from a powerful volley. With 15 minutes remaining Adam Davison’s towering header from another dangerous Wallace corner gave the Mallards a 3 – 1 lead. Like Strain in the first half Farrell was unlucky not to score when his powerful 20 yard dive hit the inside of the post and bounced across the goal line to safety. In the dying minutes the hard working Bryan Owens was brought down in the penalty area and he successfully converted the spot kick to give the Mallards a deserved 4 – 1 win.

St Marys U16’s 0 – 0 B’mallard 29.11.08

Poor finishing and refereeing resulted in the Mallards dropping 2 points in a game they dominated from the start. In the opening minute Lee Walker intercepted a back pass but his shot hit the post with the keeper stranded. A well worked free kick saw the St Mary’s keeper tip over a Johnny Hoy shot and Louis Leonard also brought out a good save. Ben Brown, Niall Wallace and Charlie Mitten were rarely troubled in defence and Walker and Brian Owens on the wings were always a threat. Five minutes before the break a Walker corner was met with a towering header by Hoy into the roof of the net but this was harshly ruled out for pushing by the St Marys referee. John Edgar and Walker both had further efforts saved but for all their dominance the half time score remained 0 – 0.

St Mary came more into the game in the second half but the Mallards continued to create and miss opportunities. John Currie’s cross from the left was met by Owens but his shot from 6 yards went over the bar with the keeper well beaten. In the space of 10 minutes the Mallards were awarded two free kicks in dangerous positions but Edgar and Owens both failed to test the keeper. At the other end a St Marys free kick narrowly missed the post. Several offside decisions went against the Mallards when in dangerous positions and they again hit the post with 10 minutes remaining following a goalmouth scramble. Despite their domination they were unable to break the deadlock and the score finished 0 - 0.

Limavady 1 – 0 Ballinamallard 08.11.08

B’mallard U16’s gave a battling performance with a depleted squad but came up short against a physically stronger Limavady on Saturday. Limavady dominated the early play and took the lead on 10 minutes after a dangerous cross into the B’mallard penalty area was inadvertently deflected by Andrew Farrell into his own net. Limavady surged forward with Ben Brown, Adam Davison, Charlie Mitten and Niall Wallace at the back remaining solid under constant pressure. It was 20 minutes before the first threatening Mallards attack and it was the lively John Joe Strain who dragged his shot just wide of the post. In the remaining 10 minutes of the half the possession was shared but neither side could find the net.

A much improved second half display saw the Mallards come more into the game and the Limavady keeper did well to keep out a deflected shot. Farrell was pushed further forward and chances were being created. A Konrad Sak cross hit the angle and Strain had shots blocked but Limavady’s speedy breaks were a constant threat and from one of these Andrew Nevin did well to tip a close range volley over the bar. Further injuries to Davison and Strain blunted the Mallards attack but in the final minute they thought they had snatched a point with a strong appeal after the ball appeared to go over the line but to their dismay a goal was not awarded.

Armagh Celtic 1 - 6 Ballinamallard Youth 01.11.08

B’mallard took only three minutes to take the lead in this game which they dominated for all but 10 minutes of this game. It came from a long kick out from Andrew Sheridan which was headed on by Konrad Sak who was making his first start for the Mallards. The ball fell invitingly to John Joe Strain who beat the last defender and stroked the ball home. The Mallards got their second when Sak again set up Strain who hammered home from a tight angle. At this stage the Mallards were completely in control and it was no surprise when they scored their third with another through ball from Sak. The Celtic keeper was first to the ball but his clearance was charged down by Strain and he reacted quickly to knock in the rebound and make the half time score 3 – 0.

Armagh Celtic started much the better and within a minute they got their equaliser with a fierce volley from 20 yards. The game swung Celtic’s way and they should have scored again when a free kick fell to an unmarked striker but his shot from 10 yards went over the bar. Ten minutes into the second half keeper Andrew Sheridan tipped another shot onto the bar before the Mallards regained control. Sak deservedly got on the score sheet with a tap in after the keeper could only parry a Johnny Hoy shot and within 10 minutes he got his second in a similar fashion following a John Currie shot which was also parried. Strain became the provider after a strong run and cross from the right was met by Currie who tapped in from 6 yards to make the final score 6 – 1.

Ballinamallard Youth 3 - 0 Sunnyside 18.10.08

Ballinamallard Youth travelled to the Kernan playing fields, Craigavon for the meeting with Sunnyside. From the start the Mallards were the much livelier team, quickly stringing together some neat passing moves. Farrell and Owens dominated midfield and constantly pushed the ball forward to the front pairing of Strain and Hoy. Unfortunately Hoy was to have a frustrating day as several of his efforts missed the target. Strain’s shooting boots were firmly on his feet and there were only 10 minutes on the clock when he opened the scoring. The goal came courtesy an excellent 50 yard cross field pass by Mitten into the path of Strain who easily took the ball round Sunnyside’s defence before slotting it into the bottom right hand corner of the net. The Mallards second goal came 3 minutes later as Strain’s volley flipped off the crossbar into the path of the predatory Farrell who drilled it into the back of the net. Ballinamallard continued to dominate the play with Walker and Wallace creating opportunities for the forwards. But wasted efforts by Strain, Owens and Hoy failed to reward their dominance. Sunnyside defended resolutely and tried to create some chances for themselves however McConkey and Brown dealt with any threat comfortably.

After the restart the Mallard’s inability to convert their dominance and chances in the first half could have proved very costly as Sunnyside had a superb strike on the Mallards goal. Fortunately Keeper Sheridan pulled off an outstanding save to deny Sunnyside their opener. Currie and Walker worked hard in midfield but further misses by Houlihan and Owens added to the Mallards frustration in front of goal. The game was finally put to rest mid way through the second half when the hard working Owens eventually broke his goal famine after collecting an exquisite pass from Walker. Overall this was a solid performance from Ballinamallard with the excellent midfield four controlling the game. The back four also worked well and McConkey showed his versatility with a comfortable performance at centre back partnering the ever reliable Ben Brown. However Ballinamallard will need to reflect on their extravagance in front of goal as against stiffer opposition they would have been severely punished.

Craigavon City 2 - 1 Ballinamallard Youth 05.10.08

Ballinamallard travelled to Tannaghmore on Saturday morning after winning the Brendan Keogh U-15 League Cup the previous night in Omagh. However it was an injury hit team that travelled with 7 of the squad missing. A reshuffle saw several players in positions which they would not normally play in and Conrad Zak, Alonso Houlihan and Ronan McDonough all make the starting team. Craigavon was a physical outfit but composed tackling by McDonough and McConkey at the back saw off some early opportunities for Craigavon. Sheridan was installed at left back and Mitten moved across to partner McConkey at centre back. The team was dealt a further injury blow when Hoy who had started brightly, showing early promise had to be replaced as a result of a hip injury after 7 minutes. Fortunately Walker was available and slotted into Hoy’s midfield role. The early exchanges were dominated by Craigavon but determined play by the Mallards and strong runs by Sheridan from left back saw them weather the early storms. However a defensive error saw the ball poorly cleared and a Craigavon forward fired the ball into the back of the net.

The Mallards were galvanized into action and excellent passing interchanges between Walker, Strain and Houlihan saw them threaten the Craigavon goal. The pressure was justly rewarded when Houlihan neatly side- stepped two Craigavon backs to slot the ball calmly past the Keepers left. Back on level par the Mallards continued to press but the final clinical passes needed to reward their effort broke down as tired legs were unable to control the ball in the Craigavon box.

The second half again started brightly for Ballinamallard with the breeze at their backs. However in spite of good forward ball by the back four Zak, Houlihan and Strain were unable to take advantage of it. Wallace, Walker and Currie worked extremely hard at midfield coping with the Craigavon attacks but a further defensive error saw Craigavon take the lead mid way through the second half. Chris Woods came on for Conrad Zak and made an impact up front as he proved quite a handful for the Craigavon backs. The ‘never say die’ attitude of Ballinamallard continued apace but the efforts were to find no reward and Craigavon ran out eventual winners 2 – 1 in a match which on a different day Ballinamallard would have comfortably claimed.

Glenavon 1 – 1 B’mallard @ Tannaghmore 27.09.08

The opening exchanges were physical but fair with both defences ensuring that chances were limited. With 20 minutes gone a Matthew McConkey precision cross to the unmarked John Joe Strain gave the Mallards their first chance but Strain’s header was well saved. This was quickly followed by a Lee Walker volley which narrowly missed the upright. Although possession was shared equally the Mallards were creating the best chances and a Chris Sheridan low drive pulled out the best in the Glenavon keeper. On 25 minutes good build up play between John Currie and Sheridan gave Strain a chance and his 20 yard curling shot found the corner of the net. On the stroke of half time Andrew Nevin made a terrific save low to his left to push the ball out but in the ensuing scramble Niall Wallace was alleged to have fouled a Glenavon player and the resulting penalty was dispatched to leave the half time score 1 – 1.

Both teams had chances to score in the second half with Glenavon missing a good chance and Brian Owens seeing his cross kicked off the line. Strain was denied again by outstanding goalkeeping and a dangerous Ronan McDonough shot was deflected for a corner. Although Nevin in the Mallard goal had a quiet game he was called into action in the dying minutes to deny Glenavon with a superb save.

Newry Celtic 2 – 3 B’mallard @ LPP 20.09.08

B’mallard edged out Newry Celtic in an exciting match which was a game of two halves with the Mallards in total control in the first. John Joe Strain opened the scoring after 20 minutes when he received through ball from Lee Walker. He beat the last defender wide on the left and scored with a shot from a difficult angle. Shortly after he scored a similar goal after a fine pass from Chris Sheridan. The Mallards were causing problems on Celtic’s right side with Niall Wallace at left back setting up many of the attacks. Celtic were thrown a lifeline just before the break when awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. The kick wasn’t dealt with and the ball was scrambled home from six yards.

Ten minutes into the second half John Currie’s penetrating cross field ball was gathered by Sheridan and he drove the ball low into the net to regain the two goal margin. Walker, Johnny Hoy and Scott Byers all missed good chances to increase the lead and these looked costly when Celtic pulled one back when a free kick was deflected past Andrew Sheridan. It was backs to the wall in the remaining ten minutes with the Mallards unable to get out of their own half. Ben Brown in the centre of a reshuffled defence was again outstanding and his experience helped the Mallards survive a few scares and see out the game.

Windmill Stars 1 – 1 Mallards @ Kernan 13.09.08

B’mallard U16’s opened their Mid Ulster campaign with a hard fought draw against Windmill Stars. Andrew Farrell‘s shot over the bar after 20 minutes was quickly followed by a low drive from Lee Walker which narrowly missed the post. The Mallards were creating the chances and playing good football but Windmill threatened on the break and central defenders Charlie Mitten and Ben Brown both made vital interceptions. On the half hour mark Farrell broke from midfield and brought a good save from the keeper but at half time the score remained 0 – 0.

Ten minutes into the second half the Mallards scored the opening goal when a long ball from Ronan McDonough was gathered by Johnny Hoy. His pace and strength took him past the last defender and his powerful shot beat the keeper. Matthew McConkey almost got on the end of a cross at the back post and at the other end a Windmill striker scuffed his shot and Andrew Nevin gather comfortably. Konrad Sak had a shot from the edge of the penalty area go wide but in the final minute Windmill scored an unlikely equaliser. A cross from the right was met by an outstretched foot in the six yard box and the ball struck the underside of the bar and in to give Windmill a share of the points.

N.Ireland Cup 2009

N. IRELAND CUP Results / Reports

Round 2

21.02.09 Ballinamallard Youth 0 - 1 Tristar @ Bawnacre.

Round 1:

13.12.08 Donemana 1 - 5 Ballinamallard youth @ Ballymagorry

Hoy (2), Edgar (2) & Walker.

Ballinamallard 0 -1 Tristar

B’mallard failed to reach the last 16 of the N. Ireland cup despite a gutsy performance at the Bawnacre. The opening 10 minutes was a tight affair with little goalmouth action but plenty of committed tackling. On 15 minutes John Joe Strain brought the best out of the Tristar keeper with a stinging volley which was well held. Shortly after this Tristar won a free kick 25 yards from the Mallard goal. They sprung the offside trap and a looping header dropped wide of Andrew Nevin and into the net. The remainder of the half saw possession shared but the Mallards were making the best chances. Niall Wallace had a volley go wide as did Andy Farrell’s header from a dangerous Johnny Hoy cross. Lee Walker had a shot go narrowly over and just before break he brought a good save from the excellent keeper.

It was more of the same after the break with Bryan Owens having a shot saved and Wallace’s drive going narrowly wide. Farrell latched onto a Louis Leonard through ball but saw his effort saved. With 15 minutes remaining Nevin was forced into a good save low to his right as the Mallards pressed forward in search of an equaliser. With two at the back the Mallards were open to a series of breaks but Ben Brown and Charlie Mitten were superb in protecting Nevin’s goal. In the dying seconds Strain put Farrell through but his shot was blocked on the line and in the ensuing scramble the keeper eventually gathered the ball to deny the Mallards a deserved equaliser.

Donemana 1 – 5 B’mallard

B’mallard progressed to the second round of the N.Ireland cup with this comfortable victory at Donemana. The game was effectively over after 20 minutes when the Mallards raced to a four goal lead with Johnny Hoy scoring twice in the first 10 minutes. In the opening seconds Hoy burst through the hesitant defence but pulled his shot wide. Minutes later an identical break saw him control a long ball on his chest and get the opener with a low shot to the keeper’s right. With 10 minutes on the clock he scored his second with a shot from 20 yards which squirmed through the keeper’s hands. The Mallards were attacking at will with Lee Walker and Louis Leonard both having efforts saved. Dangerous corners from Niall Wallace were causing problems and John Edgar benefited from slackness in the defence to bundle one home. On 20 minutes Edgar again rose above the defence to head in from another corner to make the score 4 – 0. Just before the break and with the Mallards continually pressing they were caught on the break and Donemana pulled one back.

The second half continued in the same vein with the Mallards in complete control on an increasingly heavy pitch. They carved out a catalogue of good chances and but for some glaring misses would have hit double figures such was their dominance. With 10 minutes remaining they did score when Walker received the ball wide on the right, his pace took him past the last defender and he coolly stroked the ball to the side of the out coming keeper to make the final score 1 - 5. This was a polished performance by the Mallards but against stiffer opposition in latter rounds of the cup their poor finishing would prove costly.

5-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT @ FIVEMILETOWN - 04.02.09

B’mallard Youth select won the Western 5-a-side competition held at Fivemiletown College on 04.02.09.

Lisnaskea Rovers 2 – 3 Ballinamallard Youth - 03.10.08 Cup Final

Ballinamallard started the match without their outstanding centre back Louis Leonard who had his appendix removed earlier in the week. They were also without their powerful centre midfielder, John Edgar, who was on duty with the Northern Ireland in the U-15 Victory Shield Trophy against England in Ballymena. However the strength of successive Ballinamallard teams is their squad system and the U-15’s had replacements ready to take up the challenge. Ballinamallard started brightly and from the kick-off a through ball to Hoy signaled his cup ambitions as his shot from outside the box flew just wide of the Rover’s left goal post. This initial pressure saw Ballinamallard dominate the opening minutes with an array of slick passing between Sheridan, Hoy and Owens in mid-field and neat little through passes to Strain who proved a handful in and around the Rover’s box. The Mallards pressure was rewarded after 7 minutes when a superbly executed move saw Hoy lay off the ball to Curry in the Rover’s box. Curry neatly rounded full back Morrison and found the waiting Sheridan who hammered the ball into the bottom right of the Lisnaskea net to open the scoring.

However this jolted Lisnaskea into action and Mc Grath started to make their presence felt as they dominated the midfield aerial battle and put good ball through to the front pairing. Their effort was justifiably rewarded on 14 minutes when a defensive error between Mitten, Brown and Davison at the back failed to clear their lines and the ball landed at the feet of Kennedy just inside the box. Kennedy was alert to the gift and his superbly executed left foot strike found the top right hand corner of the net well out of the reach of Nevin’s dive.

The Mallards back four of Mitten, Davison, Brown and Corrigan were also rock solid with stand in centre back Davison alert to every threat. His deft pass to the waiting Corrigan saw one of the Mallards best moves of the match as Corrigan found Sheridan waiting on the sideline. Sheridan rounded two tackles and passed to Farrell who shot just wide of the top right. The resulting kick-out saw Andy Farrell win the breaking ball at midfield. He combined with Owens and put a slick pass through to Hoy who took on Morrison as the Rovers skipper was alert to the danger. However Hoy’s dummy saw the ball reach Strain and his kick was parried wide by the Keeper. The resulting corner from Farrell found Sheridan’s head but with his back to goal all he could do direct it away from the goal where it was seized by the waiting Hoy. Meanwhile Davison had taken up an excellent position at the edge of the box and Hoy alert to the opportunity put the ball at his feet. Davison’s first time shot saw the ball rocket into the back of the net. This put Ballinamallard in front at half time with the prospect of another excellent 35 minutes football for the spectators to savour in the second half.

Ballinamallard started the second half with Walker replacing Curry on the right hand side of midfield. From the kick off a superb tackle by the highly composed Corrigan at left back saw him deprive Colin Kennedy of a chance to equalize the scores early in the half. A few minutes later Andrew Nevin was called into action as a brilliant pass saw Brown wrong footed and McGrath have a shot on goal. For the Mallards Bryan Owens excellent tackling around midfield constantly thwarted the Rovers attacks and his alertness in capturing the ball saw him then take on and beat two defenders before calmly passing the ball to Hoy. Sheridan collected Hoy’s pass before releasing to Strain. Hoy meanwhile had continued his run and was perfectly positioned to take Strain’s clever pass before striking the ball with his trademark flamboyance into the back of the net.

Lisnaskea piled on the pressure and Mc Grath reclaimed midfield and started to get the ball through to Kennedy. The Mallards were equal to the challenge and stout defending by Davison and Brown at the centre and Mitten and Corrigan on the wings saw the wave of attacks snuffed out.

However the match took a dramatic turn when a face injury to Davison saw him leave the field for 5 minutes for medical attention. An error by Nevin from the kick out saw a 9 man Ballinamallard defend a free kick on the right hand side of their penalty box. McGrath stood up to take the kick and buried the ball in the top left hand corner of the net to leave the score 3 – 2 with 4 minutes of normal time remaining. However shortly after the restart Sheridan went down with a double leg cramp and failing to recover from treatment had to be substituted by Wallace. The tension was increased when the Referee indicated that there was to be 10 minutes of injury time added on at the end of normal fulltime. The Mallards were facing a significant battle as Bryan Owens had to be replaced, again as a result of cramp, by McConkey and Lisnaskea with their tails in the air could scent another goal. However in spite of wave after wave of attack the Mallards clung on to their slender lead and ran out champions for the third year in a row.

In the presentation ceremony the League Chairman Davy Wheeler congratulated both teams on their epic encounter and acclaimed the match ‘as one of the best finals to have been played in the Brendan Keogh Youth Cup.

Killen 1 – 2 B’mallard - Cup Semi-final 17.09.08

B’mallard U15’s progressed to the BKYL cup final following this 2 – 1 victory away to Killen. Killen were penned into their own half for most of the opening period with Christopher Sheridan and Lee Walker both testing the keeper. The opening goal came on 20 minutes when a Ruairi Corrigan ball from defence was hooked forward by Walker to John Joe Strain. He rounded the last defender and the Killen keeper could only parry the powerful shot into the net. Minutes later a Johnny Hoy free kick went over the bar and at the other end Andrew Sheridan did well to hold onto a 20 yard drive. On the half hour the Mallards doubled their lead with Walker and Strain again combining well and putting Strain through. He rounded the keeper and although forced wide his left foot shot from a difficult angle found the net. Just before the break a Killen free kick from the edge of the penalty area narrowly missed the post.

In the second half the industrious Andrew Farrell had a header saved and Strain saw his shot tipped round the post. With 10 minutes remaining Andrew Sheridan pulled off a terrific shot low to his left from a free kick as Killen came more into the game. Killen did get one back from a 20 yard shot which Sheridan failed to hold and the Mallards troubles continued when they went down to ten men as Farrell was carried off injured. Despite the increasing Killen pressure some resolute defending from the Mallards ensured they secured a place in the final.

Ballinamallard Youth 5 – 1 Dergview 25.06.08

B’mallard romped to a 5 – 1 victory with Johnny Hoy scoring all five in a fine individual performance. His opener on 15 minutes came after a Chris Sheridan flick which left him one on one with the keeper and he coolly slipped the ball low into the net. The second, ten minutes later came from the penalty spot after hand ball. The Mallards adapted better to the windy conditions with Ruairi Corrigan and Andrew Farrell in defence rarely troubled. John Currie and Lee Walker both tested the keeper but the Mallards couldn’t add to the 2 – 0 half time score.

The second half continued in the same vein and Hoy completed his hat trick when he received a through ball from Corrigan, beat the last defender and hammered in past the diving keeper. James Turley and Lee Walker both brought good saves from the keeper but with 15 minutes remaining Hoy scored his fourth. He latched onto another through ball, this time from Niall Wallace and his powerful shot was too much for the keeper. With 5 minutes remaining Clive Crompton pulled one back for Dergview with a well executed overhead kick which gave Andrew Nevin no chance. Immediately from the kick off Hoy gathered the ball in midfield, drove forward and finished off the scoring with a trademark 25 yard drive to leave the final score 5 - 1 to the Mallards.

Lisnaskea 1 – 4 B’mallard 23.06.08

B’mallard returned to winning ways against league winners Lisnaskea on Monday night with a convincing 4 – 1 victory. On 15 minutes John Joe Strain was tackled when about to shoot and the ball went for a corner. From the corner the ball was deflected onto the bar and cleared. The Mallards got the breakthrough when Chris Sheridan curling shot from the corner of the penalty area found the top corner. Lee had 2 shots saved and John Currie had a goal ruled out for offside as the Mallards finished the half in control.

Within minutes of the restart a Sheridan cross was punched out to John Edgar who scored with a left foot volley to double the lead. Lee Walker made it 3 – 0 after getting on the end of an Edgar cross but Lisnaskea were unlucky minutes later when a rasping Colin Kennedy drive rebounded off the bar to safety. With 15 minutes remaining Johnny Hoy gathered the ball in midfield, beat a defender and his 25 yard shot sailed into the top corner. Strain saw red for dissent before Andy Little pulled one back with a well taken goal from inside the penalty area.

Killen U15’s 4 – 1 B’mallard 18.06.08

Ballinamallard slumped to a 4 – 1 defeat to Killen following this lack lustre performance. In the opening minute they found themselves 1 – 0 down after losing possession on the edge of the penalty area and Keith Harkness’s sweet strike found the corner of the net. Straight from the break John Joe Strain found the net but the effort was harshly ruled off for offside. With 15 minutes gone a long cross into the Mallards penalty was not dealt with and Jamie Sproule scored from close range. Strain had a header well saved but it was Killen who continued to play the better football and before half time they scored their third with a Ryan Mayse shot from outside the penalty area.

In the second half the Mallards began creating chances with Ruairi Corrigan having a header cleared off the line and John Edgar‘s shot going wide. However with 15 minutes remaining Killen got their fourth with a low driven free kick through the defensive wall. The Mallards pulled one back when a Strain run and goal bound shot was deflected into the net and this was quickly followed by an effort from Brian Owens which the Killen keeper did well to keep out. Before the end John Currie had an effort go narrowly wide and Hoy was denied by a last ditch tackle but Killen deservedly ran out 4 – 1 winners.

Fivemiletown 0 – 3 B’mallard Youth - 04.06.08

Three second half goals helped Ballinamallard Youth overcome a weakened but stubborn Fivemiletown on Wednesday night. Fivemiletown rarely threatened in the first half and but for some excellent goalkeeping the Mallards would have sealed the game by half time. Johnny Hoy, Lee Walker, Andrew Farrell and John Joe Strain all had efforts well saved as the Mallards controlled the midfield but couldn’t find the opening goal. On the stroke of half time Mallard’s keeper Nevin was out quickly to clear in a rare moment of danger.

With 5 minutes gone in the second period Johnny Hoy settled the nerves with a trademark 30 drive to open the scoring. As in the first half the Mallards dominated with James Turley having a header saved and Walker and Owens narrowly heading over. Ten minutes from the end the Mallards were awarded a penalty for hand ball and Owens converted. In the dying minutes Walker rode two tackles on the edge of the penalty area and stroked the ball under the keeper to leave the final score 3 – 0.

B’mallard 5 – 0 Mountjoy – 19.05.08

B’mallard had a comfortable victory on Monday night with Brian Owens coolly converting an early penalty after a hand ball in the penalty area. The pace of the front two of John Joe Strain and Lee Walker were causing Mountjoy problems and it was Walker who made it 2 – 0 with a fierce shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle. Just before the break Johnny Hoy got on the score sheet with thunderous 25 yard shot.

The start of the second half saw a series of corners for the home team and from one of these John Edgar found the net with a looping header to make it 4 – 0. Mountjoy rarely troubled the Mallard defence with Matthew McConkey and Ben Brown looking solid. Just before the final whistle Edgar went on another surging run through the middle and finished with an accurate chip from 25 yards to seal the victory.

U15’s Lisbellaw 1 – 8 B’mallard 07.05.08

B’mallard had a straightforward victory away to Lisbellaw with Chris Sheridan opening the scoring in the opening 5 minutes. This was quickly followed by goals from Andrew Farrell who reacted quickly after a Matthew McConkey shot was well saved and Lee Walker. Just before the break Strain headed home from a Sheridan cross.

After the break Sheridan headed against the post but the Mallards got their fifth following fine interchange play from John Currie and Johnny Hoy and Strain was on hand to score. Lisbellaw pulled one back with an unstoppable shot from Stephen Miller from the edge of the penalty area but Hoy made it 6 – 1 after being put through by Currie and rounding the keeper. Ryan O’Sullivan from 20 yards and Strain, who completed his hat trick, finished the scoring.

B’mallard ‘B’ 1 – 5 B’mallard ‘A’ 9.4.08

B’mallard ‘A’ took control of this game against their ‘B’ team in the opening 5 minutes with Alonso Houlihan scoring from 6 yards after good build up play from Matthew McConkey and Johnny Hoy. Nathan Wallace in the ‘B’s nets was much the busier keeper and twice smothered shots from Houlihan to save likely goals as the ‘A’s dominated. As the game wore on the ‘B’ team settled with Ryan Sandford and Aaron Little at the back giving solid performances. In the last minute of the half an Andrew Farrell shot from outside the penalty area took a wicked deflection into the net giving Wallace no chance.

Niall Wallace’s in swinging corners were causing the ‘B’s problems throughout the game and it was from here that the ‘A’s increased their lead with the ball going in despite keeper Wallace getting his fingers to it. Hoy scored shortly after with a rasping shot from 20 yards which went in off a post and Houlihan would have had his second but for a good save. At the other end David Fitzpatrick got on the end of a corner and scored past Andrew Sheridan to make it 4 -1. The ‘A’s scored their fifth in the dying seconds following neat passing between Lee Walker and John Currie which ended with Hoy scoring his second low to the keepers left.

B'mallard 7 - 2 E'killen Town 2.4.08

Four goals in the opening ten minutes set the stage for this first game of the new season. Within a minute E’killen Town were awarded a free kick 20 yards out. The resulting shot struck the wall but rolled to the corner of the six-yard box where Mark Burns reacted quickly to hook the ball past Andrew Nevin in nets. Minutes later a quickly taken corner saw Chris Sheridan cross to John Currie whose accurate lob beat Joe McGovern in the Town goal. The Mallards took the lead when a Charlie Mitten long ball was met by John Joe Strain who interchanged passes with Johnny Hoy. Strain was set free and he cooly finished past McGovern. With less than ten minutes on the clock Town were awarded a penalty after a push in the penalty box and Niall Shannon’s kick into the roof of the net gave Nevin no chance. Just before half time Strain scored twice more after being released by Dean Cochrane and Charlie Mitten with similar through balls.

The Mallards continued to create chances in the second half and John Edgar made it 5 – 2 with an unstoppable 20 yard drive. In the final minutes Lee Walker and Strain each scored and but for a series of terrific saves from McGovern the score would have bigger.

B’mallard Youth 0 -1 Dungannon Youth M.U. Cup S.F. 26.04.08

B’mallard U15’s defence of the Mid Ulster cup ended on Saturday following this 1 – 0 defeat to Dungannon. This was an excellent game from two fully committed and well matched teams. Mallard’s keeper Andrew Nevin was called into action saving from a 20 yard shot low to his right and at the other end Lee Walker just failed to get on the end of a John Joe Strain driven cross. D’gannon were creating the better chances and 10 minutes before the break a looping header hit the bar and bounced to safety. Just before the break a weakly hit back pass forced Nevin into a rushed clearance which went straight to a D’gannon forward. The resulting shot forced the retreating Nevin into a fine fingertip save to deflect the ball out for a corner.

The Mallards started the second half strongly with Brian Owens flashing a header narrowly past the post. Very few clear cut chances were being created by either team but the Mallards were grateful for a Charlie Mitten goal line clearance after a scramble in the penalty area. D’gannon broke the deadlock with 15 minutes remaining when the ball fell to a forward 25 yards out and his sweet strike to the roof of the net gave Nevin no chance. As expected the Mallards pressed forward in search of the equaliser. John Edgar’s surging run into the penalty area was ended with a last ditch tackle and in the dying minutes the Mallards were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area but Edgar’s shot was well gathered by the keeper low to his left. Despite pressing the Mallards were unable to force extra time but can be pleased with this gritty and determined performance.

Warrenpoint 1 – 1 B’mallard Mid Ulster League 19.4.08

B’mallard U15’s completed their Mid Ulster league campaign with a 1 – 1 draw against Warrenpoint on Saturday. John Joe Strain had three early chances but was denied by athletic saves and a goaline clearance as the Mallards created chances at will. Johnny Hoy and Brian Owens both had shots go wide and it was deep into the half before Warrenpoint’s first serious shot narrowly missed the angle.

Ten minutes into the second half the Mallards took the lead after a flowing move on the left. Ruairi Corrigan supplied Chris Sheridan and he found Strain on the edge of the penalty area. Strain laid the ball off to Lee Walker who in turn passed to Andrew Farrell whose firm strike from inside the area found the net. Further chances fell to Walker and Niall Wallace but against the run of play Warrenpoint equalised. A corner wasn’t dealt with and after a scramble on the six yard line the ball was hammered home. In the last 10 minutes the Mallards laid siege to the W’point goal and John Currie was unlucky when his strike hit a post. Good goalkeeping and frantic goal line clearances denied the Mallards and left the final score 1 – 1.

Craigavon 0 – 3 Ballinamallard Mid Ulster Cup 12.4.08

B’mallard U15’s progressed to the semi final of the Mid Ulster cup with a 3 – 0 victory over Craigavon City on Saturday. The first half was a rather dour affair with play mostly condensed into the middle. Mallard’s keeper Andrew Sheridan had little to do and at the other end, two shots narrowly wide from Johnny Hoy and a Matthew McConkey header were the only threat in a rather lack lustre performance.

A vastly improved second half saw the Mallards get a grip on the game with John Currie and Andrew Farrell dominating the right wing and it was from here the opening goal came. Currie and Farrell combined and Farrell’s cross was gathered by Christopher Sheridan in the penalty area. He laid the ball back to Hoy and his precise side foot effort nestled in the corner. Farrell was also involved in the second after another surging run and accurate cross to Sheridan who made no mistake from 18 yards. With 10 minutes remaining Alonso Houlihan scored from inside the penalty area, again after neat build up play from Currie and Farrell. In the dying seconds a terrific 50 yard cross field ball from Sheridan was chested by Currie on the corner of the penalty area but his volley narrowly went over the ball to leave the final score 3 – 0 to the Mallards.

Portadown 2 – 5 B’mallard - Mid Ulster Cup 5.4.08

B’mallard began their defence of the Mid Ulster Cup with a hard fought victory at Lurgan. Portadown took an early lead when poor marking from a corner resulted in a free header from 6 yards. Within 5 minutes the Mallards were level after Christopher Sheridan beat 2 players wide on the left and his precision pass found Lee Walker who coolly finished past the out coming keeper. The Mallards were creating plenty of chances but were guilty of wayward finishing. This began to look costly when Portadown took the lead with an unstoppable volley from the edge of the box. Just before the break Edgar was tackled when about to shoot but the ball broke kindly to Walker who reacted quickly to finish through the keepers legs.

The Mallards domination continued after the break but they were lucky not to go behind for a third time when a shot rebounded off their woodwork. This was Portadown’s last real chance and with 20 minutes remaining John Joe Strain scored after being put through by Edgar. Edgar struck the bar from distance as Portadown were restricted to the occasional break. Strain made it 4 – 2 after good work by Johnny Hoy and with 5 minutes remaining Hoy controlled a pass from Matthew McConkey and drove home from 18 yards to complete the deserved victory.

Cookstown 2 - 0 B'mallard Youth 02.02.08

B’mallard faltered in their search for top spot in the league after this 2 – 0 defeat at a bitterly cold Cookstown. As expected the opening period was a tight affair with the play being squeezed into the middle and although both sides kept the ball down the defences were rarely troubled. On 15 minutes the Mallards were fortunate when a shot from outside the penalty area struck the post with keeper Andrew Nevin beaten. This spurred on Cookstown who began to take control with defenders Andrew Farrell, Louis Leonard and Ben Brown under constant pressure. Cookstown deservedly took the lead on 15 minutes; however this came about in controversial circumstances following a good block save from Nevin. The ball bounced to the by line and was quickly gathered by Nevin but a Cookstown player kicked the ball out of his hands and it was knocked into the empty net despite strong appeals by the Mallards. The Mallards responded immediately with a neat move by John Joe Strain and Chris Sheridan finishing with Sheridan’s shot from 20 yards being well saved. Cookstown were providing the bigger threat with Nevin being much the busier and the Mallards midfield struggling. Just before half time the Mallards almost equalised against the run of play when Strain got on the end of a Dean Cochrane cross but his volley from the edge of the penalty area went narrowly wide.

After the break the Mallards almost scored following a scramble in the Cookstown goalmouth. The ball fell to John Edgar but his header under pressure went narrowly over the angle. The opening stages were dominated by the Mallards but they were unable to test the Cookstown keeper although John Currie on the wide right continually posed a threat. Cookstown were making the better chances and increased their lead when a cross into the penalty was met by an unmarked striker who headed powerfully towards the net. Farrell on the line was judged to have handled the ball and the resulting penalty was dispatched with ease. The game again swung Cookstown’s way and Nevin made two good saves and Leonard’s desperate tackle as last man saved further scoring. On a rare excursion into the Cookstown area Strain beat two defenders but his goalbound shot was blocked. Strain had another shot go over the ball at the end but Cookstown deserved this victory and go top of the league.

B'mallard Youth 4 - 1 Warrenpoint 26.01.08
B’mallard U15’s quick start proved decisive as they took 3 points against Warrenpoint at Craigavon. A Dean Cochrane long throw in the second minute caused confusion in the penalty area and Lee Walker scored with a right foot shot from 6 yards. 5 minutes later a similar Cochrane throw gave John Joe Strain a chance but his shot which went wide. Niall Wallace had a 20 yard effort go over the bar after good work on the left by Andrew Farrell and at the other end Andrew Nevin was quickly out to gather when Warrenpoint broke through. The Mallards were doing most of the pressing and were rewarded after a long ball from Wallace was well gathered by Walker, his pace took him past the last defender and he found the net with a well placed shot in the corner. Another cross from Wallace was controlled by Strain but his shot went the wrong side of the post. Strain flashed a header wide following a well worked corner involving Farrell and John Currie and minutes later a Charlie Mitten throw set Strain free but his effort again went wide with the keeper beaten. In the dying seconds both Walker and Strain had shots saved as the Mallards finished the half impressively but with only a 2 – 0 lead.

The second half continued as the first with Walker’s header from a Matthew McConkey cross just missing the upright. The third goal came after 10 minutes when a Wallace corner was fumbled by the keeper and Strain was on hand to hook a left foot volley into the top of the net through a crowd of players. Wallace’s crosses were causing problems for the Warrenpoint defence and Walker was denied his hat trick by an excellent save from his header. The strong running and tackling of Mitten on the right was a source of strength for the Mallards and his through ball to Strain almost provided the fourth but Strain was denied by a desperate goal line clearance. Minutes later an identical Mitten through ball set Walker free but his effort was blocked by the keeper on the edge of the penalty area. However the ball fell kindly to Alonso Houlihan and his low shot from 25 yards found the net. Houlihan had another chance following the restart but his shot when off balance from 6 yards brought a fine reflex save. 10 minutes from the end Warrenpoint scored in a rare break despite Andrew Nevin getting his fingertips to a powerful 20 yard volley. Further chances fell to Brian Owens and Walker but the Mallards ended up with a comfortable 4 – 1 victory.

B’mallard 2 – 2 Cookstown 1.12.07

B’mallard met Cookstown at the Bawnacre on Saturday and played out a thrilling 2 – 2 draw. The Mallards got the best possible start when a Chris Sheridan 30 yard free kick from a wide angle found the net despite the keeper getting his hands to it. It was all B’mallard and John Edgar and Lee Walker both had shots go wide. The Mallards were coping better with the difficult conditions and the Cookstown penalty area was under siege with the lively John Joe Strain, Brian Owens and left winger Sheridan causing problems for the defence. However it was Cookstown who scored next after a mix up in the centre of the Mallards let in a forward who chipped the out coming Andrew Sheridan to get an unlikely equaliser. The Mallards were stung by this and again poured forward with Owens shooting over and Strain having a shot well saved. With 20 minutes gone the Mallards regained the lead after Edgar found Strain 25 yards out. Strain dummied the last defender, took the ball round the keeper and although forced wide he managed to squeeze the ball past a defender on the line. Before the break Strain saw his header from a corner go narrowly over and had a toe poke go inches round the post but both teams went in at half time 2 – 1.

The second half was played mostly in midfield with Matthew McConkey, Owens and Edgar all give strong performances against equally aggressive opponents. Cookstown had more of the possession but very few chances were being created for either side. Mallards keeper Sheridan comfortably saved a 25 yard free kick and was relieved to see another go narrowly wide. The Mallards were dangerous on the break and Strain beat a defender on the half way line to be 1 v 1 but a wild lunge from the keeper forced him wide and his goal bound shot was cleared off the line by a defender. With 5 minutes remaining Johnny Hoy found himself in a similar position but the keeper scramble back to save well. The pressure was mounting on the Mallards defence and Louis Leonard and Dean Cochrane both made valuable interceptions. In the dying seconds a long ball to the wing was controlled by a Cookstown winger and his low cross into the penalty area was met by an unmarked forward who finished from 6 yards to spark celebrations from the travelling players and support.

Ballinamallard Youth 1 - 1 Dungannon 24.11.07

This top of the table clash ended in stalemate after a thrilling 1 – 1 draw at Dungannon. The opening 15 minutes was a cagy affair but D’gannon had most of the early possession and Dean Cochrane, Ben Brown and Louis Leonard in defence were kept busy. John Edgar had the first shot of the game on 10 minutes but it narrowly missed the upright. Edgar had a better chance 5 minutes later when John Joe Strain’s flighted ball to the edge of the box found him in space but his shot under pressure was saved by the keeper. Mallard’s keeper Andrew Sheridan was quickly out at the feet of a D’gannon forward to snuff out the danger and knock the ball to safety as Dungannon poured forward and a few minutes later he was happy to see a terrific 25 yard shot fly just over the bar. Andrew Farrell playing out of position at left back was given the duty of marking the Dungannon forward Wallace who is on trial with Newcastle and Spurs but a man of the match performance from Farrell kept the talented player quiet. The Mallards took the lead after a flowing 4 man move. Chris Sheridan in midfield passed to Lee Walker, making his debut, who in turn fed John Currie on the edge of the penalty area. His neat flick back to Walker was laid on to John Joe Strain who brilliantly finished into the top corner with a left foot curling shot. Just before half time D’gannon deservedly equalised after a drive across the penalty area was well met with a volley to give Sheridan no chance and leave the half time score 1 – 1.

The Mallards started the second half briskly with Strain shooting narrowly over. Two minutes later a move between John Currie and Brian Owens released Currie and his darting move inside the penalty area was ended when he was scythed down but to the amazement off all, no penalty was awarded. The Mallards with the wind at their back pressed forward and Strain had a low shot tipped round the post. On 20 minutes the Mallard were awarded a free kick 25 yards out and Edgar’s shot was brilliantly pushed round the post for a corner. With the Mallards pressing for the winner Eoin Hamill latched on to a poor back pass and rounded the keeper but his shot from a tight angle was scrambled off the line. Despite finishing strongly the Mallards were unable to find the winner.

Ballinamallard Youth 4 – 1 Craigavon 10.11.07

Ballinamallard continued their rich vein of form and remain top level following this 4 – 1 victory over Craigavon. A bright start saw the Mallards play the first 25 minutes almost entirely in the Craigavon half. Chris Sheridan, Johnny Hoy and John Joe Strain all had shots saved and it was no surprise when they took the lead after Andrew Farrell’s precision cross was met by Sheridan’s head to find the corner of the net after 20 minutes. In a rare moment of danger Mallard keeper Michael Long was quickly off his line to clear the danger following a through ball. James Turley had a 20 yard drive brilliantly tipped round the post and Brian Owens’ 25 yard shot crashed off the bar but at half time the score remained 1 – 0.

After the break the lead was quickly increased to 2 – 0 when Farrell’s shot was parried by the keeper but Strain reacted quickly to score from close in. Against the run of play Craigavon pulled one back when an ‘up and under’ in the Mallards area was headed into the net despite Long getting a hand to it. For the first time in the game the Mallards looked nervous and were fortunate to survive a penalty appeal after a hand ball claim. Sheridan settled the nerves with a fine left foot shot 15 minutes from the end and Farrell completed the scoring when he pounced after the keeper parried a Strain shot. John Currie, Strain and Farrell all had shots well saved in the dying minutes as the Mallards finished strongly and ended up 4 – 1 winners.

Warrenpoint 1 - 4 Ballinamallard 27.10.07

B’mallard comfortably won this game 4 – 1 against Warrenpoint thanks largely to a John Joe Strain hat trick. The opening period was a tough physical encounter with the strong wind playing a major role. However it was the Mallards, with John Edgar, John Currie and Matthew McConkey in midfield who were creating chances for the lively forwards Andrew Farrell and Strain. Farrell was through 1 v 1 but the keeper saved well and he produced two more excellent saves to deny Strain and Chris Sheridan. At the other end debutant keeper Michael Long had to be quick off the mark to deny Warrenpoint. The opening goal came on 20 minutes when Edgar beat a defender and squared to Strain who scored from six yards. The Mallards dominated the remainder of the half but wayward finishing left the score 1 – 0 at the break.

Warrenpoint started the second half briskly and Ruairi Corrigan, Ben Brown, Charlie Mitten and Louis Leonard in defence were quickly into action as Warrenpoint searched for an equaliser. They got it on 45 minutes when a cross from the right was met by an unmarked striker and his clinical finish gave Long no chance. Although possession was shared it was the Mallards who were creating the best chances and they regained the lead when Strain headed powerfully into the net from a Sheridan cross. The Mallards again took control of the game and Sheridan got on the score sheet with a header following a Farrell corner. James Turley, Edgar and Sheridan all had shots go narrowly wide and the Warrenpoint keeper was forced into making saves from Strain and Farrell. Strain completed his hat trick when he headed home another Farrell corner to leave the final score 4 - 1.

16.02.08 (Round 3) Linfield 1 - 0 Ballinamallard Youth

Linfield 1 – 0 B’mallard 16.2.08 @ Lisburn

B’mallard failed to reach the last 16 of the N.I.Cup but put up a stubborn resistance before losing by a single goal to a classy Linfield at Lisburn. The Mallards started strongly and were quickly on the attack with Christopher Sheridan and Brian Owens linking well on the left. Sheridan’s resulting cross to John Edgar looked like providing the opener but the keeper was quickly out to deny him. Dean Cochrane’s long throws were also causing problems for the Linfield defence and one of these fell to John Joe Strain who made space for himself in a tight penalty area but his powerful low shot was well saved by the keeper. At the other end Linfield were being restricted to shooting from distance with Andrew Nevin in nets being rarely troubled. As the Mallards pressed, an Andrew Farrell corner was gathered by Sheridan near the front post and returned to Farrell. His cross was headed goal ward by John Edgar but comfortably saved. This bright opening seemed to surprise Linfield but half way through the first half they began to get in their stride and take control. A cross shot was met by a Linfield striker but his finish was judged offside. Minutes later Nevin had to be at his best to tip a shot over the ball and this was followed by several good saves as Linfield stroked the ball about the pitch making the Mallards work hard. Forwards Lee Walker and Strain were forced into defensive duties for the remainder of the half but the Mallards doggedly held on and at half time went in level.

The pattern continued in the second half with some heroic defending by Louis Leonard, Ben Brown and ‘Man of the Match’ Charlie Mitten. Linfield should have taken the lead 10 minutes into the half when a free header struck the post and was cleared with Nevin well beaten. Although the Mallards were under constant pressure Edgar, Walker and Strain playing on the break were giving Linfield some nervous moments but were unable to test the keeper. With 15 minutes remaining the breakthrough came. A cross to the edge of the penalty area was met by a Linfield player whose intended pass struck Leonard in the face. The ball fell kindly to a striker who made no mistake from 6 yards despite a gallant effort by Nevin. In a search for the equaliser Farrell was added to the attack and almost immediately Owens had a 20 yard shot go narrowly over. The game became wide open but Linfield continued to carry the greater threat and were unlucky to strike a post for a second time. With 5 minutes remaining Edgar was fouled 20 yards from goal in a central position. He took the kick which just went the wrong side of the post. This was to be the Mallards last chance and despite this gusty performance they exit the cup.

‘Man of the Match’ Charlie Mitten said, “There are a terrific team and deserved their victory but we did ourselves proud. We battled for everything and with the score at 0 – 0 we always had a chance of causing an upset”.

Bryansburn 0 - 7 B'mallard Youth 19.01.08 @ Bangor

B’mallard U15’s progressed to the last 16 of the N.I. Cup following this convincing 7- 0 demolition of Ards Borough League reigning champions Bryansburn Rangers. The long journey to Bangor didn’t affect the Fermanagh outfit and they opened the scoring in the first minute when a John Edgar through ball was latched onto by Lee Walker who scored from the rebound after his first effort was well saved by the keeper. A flowing move in the 5th minute involving John Joe Strain and Walker saw the impressive Edgar control a cross and scored from 6 yards. The Mallards strong midfield were running Rangers ragged and the tie was effectively over on 15 minutes when Edgar won the ball in midfield, his ball to Christopher Sheridan was quickly dispatched to Strain who finished calmly when 1 on 1 with the keeper. A few minutes later Sheridan’s 20 yard shot rebounded off the bar and this was quickly followed by a Strain shot which also hit the bar. 5 minutes before half time Strain had a shot well saved and Sheridan again hit the bar with another long range shot. On the stroke of half time Walker was brought down in the area and Edgar calmly stroked the penalty home to make the half time score 4 - 0.

The second half continued in the same vein and within 2 minutes of the restart Johnny Hoy made it 5 – 0 after gathering a Louis Leonard free kick on the edge of the penalty area. He out muscled a defender when second favourite to the ball, rounded the keeper and smashed the ball home. Mallard’s keeper Andrew Nevin was a mere spectator as defenders Ben Brown, Charlie Mitten, Dean Cochrane and Leonard had a comfortable afternoon and were never really stretched. 20 minutes into the half a Farrell corner was met by Matthew McConkey whose shot was parried but Hoy reacted quickly to prod the ball into the net for his second. The busy Walker had another goal bound effort tipped round the post for a corner but at the other end Rangers had a shot which narrowly missed the angle. In the dying seconds a McConkey cross to the back post was headed into the danger area by Walker. John Currie’s close control gave him space when closely marked and he had the composure to find the net leave the final score 7 – 0. Following his ‘Man of the Match’ presentation Chris Sheridan said, “We were very solid today and although we scored seven goals credit must also go to the defence who didn’t put a foot wrong. The remaining teams will be of a very high standard but if we get a home tie we will be confident against anyone”

B’mallard Youth 4 – 0 B’mallard Utd 22.12.07

The unfortunate pairing of B’mallard Youth against their ‘B’ team B’mallard Utd in the first round of the N.I. Cup took place at Fisher Park on Saturday with B’mallard Youth proceeding to the second round with a 4 – 0 victory. As expected with this ‘local derby’ the opening stages was a tight affair with tackles flying in but gradually the more experienced Youth gained control and shots from Johnny Hoy and Ben Brown went narrowly wide. Utd were posing little threat up front despite the best efforts of strikers Mark Elliott and David Fitzpatrick but Matthew McConkey and Louis Leonard at the heart of the Youth defence were having a solid game. After 20 minutes the Youth broke the deadlock when a Niall Wallace corner was headed goalwards but was stopped by a defenders hand on the line and a penalty was awarded. Matthew McConkey coolly stroked the ball home to give the Youth a 1 – 0 lead and continue his 100% penalty conversion record in competitive games. Despite further efforts from James Turley and Alonso Houlihan there was no further scoring in the first half largely due to a strong performance from Ryan Sandford at the heart of the Utd defence.

The Youth continued their dominance in the second half and scored from another Wallace corner. Houlihan flicked on a near post header, the ball fell to Brown on the edge of the penalty area and his terrific left foot shot into the top corner gave keeper Nathan Wallace no chance. Defenders Jamie Beatty, Alan Quinn and Darryl Brown were kept busy and but for some timely tackling the Youth would have scored freely. Nathan Wallace was much the busier keeper and his confident handling from a series of shots and crosses frustrated the Youth. Sam Wilson for Utd on the left midfield and Ronan McDonough also had good games but it was the Youth who scored their third from another telling Wallace corner when Ruairi Corrigan rose to head in. Utd put on Ben Smith, Gareth Dykes and Lee Somerville in an effort to get back into the game but it was the Youth who wrapped up the game when Hoy received the ball at the edge of the area. He drove to the by line, beat a defender and his perfect cross to the back post was powerfully headed home by Houlihan. The Youth will now meet Bryansburn Rangers from Comber in round 2 on 19.01.08.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS - MALLUSK 8.9.07

I.F.A. 'Champion of Champions' competition at Mallusk. There are 6 teams in our age, Don Bosco, Aquinas, Dungannon, Donegal Celtic and Windsor Youth. All games are 20 minutes each way.
Squad: Hoy, Farrell, Sheridan, Owens, McConkey, Strain, Corrigan, Leonard, Cochrane, Sheridan, Hamill, Currie, Turley, Houlihan and Mitten.

Donegal Celtic 2 – 2 B’Mallard Youth (B’mallard win 3 – 2 on pens)

B’mallard’s opening game in the Champion of Champions tournament at Mallusk was against Belfast league winners Donegal Celtic. Celtic started strongly and for the first 10 minutes dominated the Mallards. The Mallards came into game and Brian Owens and Jonny Hoy had efforts go close. The Mallards settled down and went 1 – 0 up when Andrew Farrell set Eoin Hamill through 1 v 1 and he scored under the keeper. An injury to keeper Andrew Sheridan saw Hoy deputise but he could do nothing to stop a Celtic equaliser against the run of play. Hoy parried another powerful shot and an alert Corrigan made a goaline clearance. John Joe Strain and Andrew Farrell had further chances as the Mallards controlled the game and with 10 minutes remaining the pressure told when Hamill headed in from a corner. With seconds remaining Celtic scored with a well taken goal to take the game to penalties. McConkey, Owens and Sheridan all scored and Hoy in nets was the hero with a good save down to his right to take the Mallards into the semi final.

Don Boscos 4 – 2 B’Mallard Youth

The semi against Derry & District champions and the eventual winners Don Boscos was a struggle for the Mallards when right from the kick off they conceded a sloppy goal. The free flowing football of the earlier game was missing and it was no surprise when they went 2 – 0 down. Corrigan in nets pulled of two good saves and just before half time and against the run of play the Mallards got back into the game when a Sheridan free kick was met by a powerful Cochrane header. Within a minute of the kick off Boscos scored directly from a corner and continued to boss the game. With 10 minutes remaining Strain gave the Mallards a unlikely lifeline when he bundled home from close range. The mini revival was short lived and Boscos made it 4 – 2 in the dying minutes

CLABBY STROLLERS 5-a-side

Both of the B'mallard teams reached the U 14 final. F.C Plate 3rd/4th Play off 28.7.07. B’mallard 2 – 2 Ards (B’mallard win 5 – 4 on pens) @ Templemore

B’mallard clinched the 3rd place in the Foyle Plate but they did it the hard way with a penalty shoot out in a game they totally dominated right from the start. With 5 minutes gone, Strain, who was to cause problems for the Ards defence throughout, sent a long cross which the keeper fumbled but Currie under pressure was unable to convert. Chance after chance fell to the Mallards with Sheridan, McConkey, Currie and Edgar swamping the Ards midfield and creating chances for Strain, Currie and Farrell. The breakthrough came when a powerful Edgar header was pushed out by the keeper, Edgar again collected the ball and drove a low cross for Strain to tap in at the back post. More chances came and went but with 5 minutes until half time Ards scored when a cross somehow by passed the Mallards defence and was stroked in by an unmarked player. On the stroke of half time Ards scored a similar goal to leave the Mallards stunned at the unlikely reversal.

Tough talking at the interval paid immediate dividends and from the kick off Strain went on a run on the left, beat 3 players and crossed into the middle where Currie muscled out two defenders and scrambled the ball home. Sensing victory the Mallards poured forward in search of goals. Owens made a powerful run through the centre and his 20 yard shot just missed the post. Farrell latched onto a Sheridan pass and ran through on goal but the keeper was out quickly to smother at his feet. Strain was also through 1 v 1 and agonisingly saw hit shot just go the wrong side of the post. Edgar, Farrell, Sheridan and Strain all had further chances but were unable to stop the game going to a penalty shoot out. Hoy, Owens, Sheridan, Strain and Corrigan all scored comfortable and with Ards missing one, victory went to the Mallards.

F.C Plate Semi Final 27.7.07. B’mallard 1 – 2 Drogheda
@ Lisnagelvin

The Mallards were edged out of a cup final spot in a game which the referee called the best in the tournament so far. With the Mallards out for revenge after losing to Drogheda in the group stages they quickly got into their stride with the front two of Farrell and Strain linking well and creating chances for Edgar and Sheridan. On 10 minutes Sheridan disposed an opponent near half way and quickly slid the ball to Edgar and his inch perfect pass put Farrell through on goal and his powerful shot from the edge of the box nestled in the corner of the net. Both sides continued to play quality football and a flowing four man Drogheda move would have ended in a wonder goal but for a terrific save from keeper Sheridan. Farrell then found himself through 1 v 1 with the keeper and rounded him but was forced too wide to get his shot on target. The equaliser came just before half time when a poor defensive clearance fell to a Drogheda player 20 yards out and his well struck shot went in of the post with Sheridan well beaten.

The second half continued in the same vein with both sides continuing to play composed football but with both defences on top no clear cut chances were created. Drogheda’s breakthrough came with 10 minutes remaining and was rather fortunate. The left winger made a strong run down the touchline and despite being harried by Leonard got his cross in from near to the corner flag. To everyone’s surprise the ball was caught by the wind and sailed into the net. After this the Mallards pressed forward and Mitten, Owens and Currie all pushed forward and started to create chances. Edgar collected the ball in midfield and found Strain but his right foot curling shot from the edge of the penalty area was well saved. With time running out Sheridan passed to Edgar 35 yards out and his first time shot cannoned of the crossbar with the keeper well beaten. Although the Mallards threw everything at Drogheda they couldn’t force an equaliser but the applause from both sets of supporters and officials at the final whistle was some reward for this gallant effort.

F.C. Plate Quarter Final 26.7.07. B’mallard 3 – 2 Coleraine
@ Buncrana

B’mallard U14’s progressed to the semi finals of the Foyle Plate after this quarter final thriller against Coleraine at rain soaked Buncrana on Thursday 26.7.07. The Mallards started briskly with the midfield of Matthew McConkey and John Edgar controlling the game and creating chances for strikers John Joe Strain and Andrew Farrell. The opening goal came on 15 minutes when John Currie broke through and struck a good shot which the keeper could only parry out to Strain who selflessly returned to Currie who scored from close range. The Mallards suffered a set back on 20 minutes when McConkey mistimed a tackle in the torrential rain and was given a straight red. This spurred on Coleraine and they equalised just before half time through a harshly awarded penalty.

After the break the Mallards again started briskly and it was Strain on the right who beat two defenders and crossed to Christopher Sheridan who’s first time shot beat the diving keeper. Although down to 10 men the Mallards dominated play and got the third when a Sheridan pass found Currie on the right, he beat one defender and struck a powerful shot which the keeper could only parry into the net. With 10 minutes remaining, and the Mallards tiring Andrew Sheridan was forced into making a brilliant one handed save down to his left to tip the ball away for a corner. Coleraine did pull one back with 2 minutes remaining after a slip at the heart of the defence to ensure a nervy ending but the Mallards held on and proceeded to the semi finals.

Group Match B'Mallard 2 - 0 Shankill. 24.07.07
@ Newbuildings

B’Mallard U14’s opened their Foyle Cup campaign with a convincing 2 – 0 win over Shankill Youth at Newbuildings on Tuesday. The first half was a close affair but it was the Mallards who created the best chances. Matthew McConkey had the ball in the net on 10 minutes with a close range shot but this was ruled out after he had strayed offside. Shankill won a free kick in a dangerous position after keeper Andrew Sheridan rushed of his area and brought down an opponent but the resulting kick went straight into the wall. John Edgar put Johnny Hoy through and his powerful shot narrowly missed the upright. Other chances fell to Andrew Farrell and Ruairi Corrigan but these were well dealt by the Shankill keeper.

The second half saw the Mallards take complete control and Farrell was unlucky to see his cross graze the top of the bar and this was quickly followed by another Farrell shot which also went narrowly over. Hoy thought he had scored when his 20 yard shot was brilliantly tipped round the post. From this corner Corrigan’s shot went just over the bar. The deserved breakthrough came after 10 minutes when Edgar’s through ball was gathered by Christopher Sheridan and his delicate chip gave the keeper no chance. It was all one way traffic, McConkey’s shot hit the outside of the post and Hoy and Sheridan both had shots saved. With 5 minutes remaining Eoin Hamill got on the end of a defence splitting pass and coolly finished to make the final score 2 – 0.

BKYL RESULTS / TABLES 2007

LEAGUE:

Ballinamallard 3 - 1 Fivemiletown (League Cup Final)

Ballinamallard U14’s clinched their second consecutive League Cup after overcoming a solid Fivemiletown at Youth Sport, Omagh on Friday night. The first half was an even affair with defences mainly in control. Fivemiletown keeper Cameron Crawford was in great form saving efforts from John Joe Strain, Andrew Farrell and John Edgar in the early stages. His confident handling and ability with crosses all evening was frustrating for the Mallards. The Mallards went one down on 25 minutes when a free kick was launched into their penalty area. Edgar and Fivemiletown’s Timmy Coote challenged for the ball but it broke to Ian Allen whose powerful header into the roof of the net gave Andrew Sheridan no chance.
On the restart John Currie’s mazy run on the right ended when he was brought down on the edge of the box. The resulting free kick was again well gathered by Crawford.

Substitute Brian Owens came on after the break and added much needed bite to the midfield. The Mallards immediately took control when John Currie dispossessed Fivemiletown from the kick-off and passed the ball back to Owens. His neatly timed pass released Edgar who beat two defenders and raced into the penalty area. As he attempted to round Crawford he was brought down by the keepers diving, outstretched hand on the edge of the six-yard box. Edgar’s confidently struck penalty low to the keeper’s right found the net to bring the Mallards level. For the first time in the game the Mallards began to assert their control with Owens and Edgar winning the centre-midfield battle. This allowed Sheridan and Currie on the wings to take on the FMT defence and set up a string of opportunities for Strain and Farrell which weren’t converted.

Ballinamallard continued to pile on the pressure and after 18 minutes Edgar, in midfield, received a ball from Charlie Mitten and his pass set Andrew Farrell away on the right. Farrell’s perfect cross found Chris Sheridan who scored from close in to put the Mallard’s 2 – 1 in front. However FMT showed great determination and character and refused to give up. They continued to press forward and remained a significant threat in the air particularly with the height advantage of the hard working Coote who created havoc in the Ballinamallard box every time he got his head on the ball.

At the other end Strain’s shot from the edge of the box went narrowly over, as did one from Farrell. Sweeper Ben Brown worked hard to contain the FMT attack aided by Ruairi Corrigan, Louis Leonard and Charlie Mitten but crosses into the Mallard’s penalty area continued to cause problems. As FMT went forward in search of an equaliser, opportunities on the break for Strain and Farrell were being created and Strain capitalised on one to score the third with 10 minutes remaining. He broke free on the half way line and out-muscled a defender, he continued his strong run and his powerful left foot shot over Crawford put the Mallards 3-1.

Whilst that might have seemed the end of the game the Mallards were fortunate when an in-swinging corner hit the crossbar after 32 minutes and in the resulting goal-mouth scramble the ball was eventually hacked away to safety. This was a very close call for Ballinamallard but it would have been a just reward for the FMT effort. Alonso Houlihan almost made it 4 – 1 in the dying seconds but was denied by a last ditch tackle.

The Referee’s final whistle was jubilantly received by the Mallards and their supporters but credit goes to both teams for an enthralling and pulsating match which was played in great spirit and sportsmanship.

‘Man of the Match’ John Currie said, “I was delighted to get the award but the team performance, especially in the second half was terrific. I thought Andrew Farrell and I linked really well and we were a constant treat. The squad is full of very good players and that helps my game by giving me freedom on the right side”.

Lisnaskea 1 – 2 Ballinamallard League cup semi-final

Ballinamallard progressed to the BKYL cup final following this 2 – 1 away victory over Lisnaskea. The opening 15 minutes were even with neither side creating any clear chances. The opening goal came after a mix up in the Mallards defence allowed Colin Kennedy space and from 25 yards out his well taken looping shot put Lisnaskea 1 – 0 up. The Mallards pressed for an equaliser and just before half time Ruairi Corrigan’s excellent pass found Christopher Sheridan free in the penalty area. He controlled the ball and his sweet left foot shot found the corner of the net.

Playing into the wind in the second half the Mallards began to control the game with Ben Brown, Dean Cochrane and Louis Leonard all looking assured at the back and Brian Owens and Johnny Hoy solid in midfield. Chances were being created and Andrew Farrell’s pace was beginning to get rewards as a series of dangerous crosses from the by line were scrambled away by Lisnaskea. John Joe Strain got on the end of one of these but his header was well saved and John Edgar had a header cleared off the line. The Lisnaskea keeper also made a great save down to his left on the line from a close range Edgar drive and saved a long range shot from Sheridan. The winner came with 10 minutes remaining when a long Edgar pass found Strain at the corner of the penalty area. He rode one tackle and took the ball round the last defender to score wide of the keeper. Andrew Sheridan’s handling was tested in the final few minutes but the Mallards saw out the remainder of the game.

Enniskillen Rangers 1 – 3 Ballinamallard - 10.9.07 (League Cup)

B’mallard progressed to the semi finals with a hard fought victory over Rangers. The opening goal came after Ruairi Corrigan’s long pass was chested by Eoin Hamill onto Chris Sheridan whose first time cross was met by a glancing header by John Currie into the corner of the net. The Mallards has most of the possession and went 2 – 0 up ten minutes before half time when Brian Owens made a strong run and finished with a powerful shot from 20 yards. Just before half time Mark Fitzpatrick pulled one back for Rangers with a well taken volley from outside the area.

The second half was a more even affair with chances for both teams. With ten minutes remaining Andrew Farrell sealed the victory with a left foot curling shot from 20 yards.

Ballinamallard 1 – 0 Killen - 20.8.07 (League Cup)

Ballinamallard edged out Killen in this preliminary round of the Erneplas League Cup in a close encounter at Fisher Park on Monday. The Mallards settled quickly into their passing game with John Edgar and Matthew McConkey combining well in midfield and creating chances for the lively front pair of Andrew Farrell and John Joe Strain. Farrell, Strain, Edgar and Chris Sheridan all had shots from outside the penalty area but good goalkeeping denied them. Ruairi Corrigan, Louis Leonard and Brian Owens at the back were rarely threatened but keeper Andrew Sheridan had to be alert to save a deflected shot. In the best move of the first half John Currie passed to Edgar in midfield and his long pass found Sheridan wide on the right. He controlled the ball and his cross was met by Edgar whose header just grazed the angle with the keeper well beaten. More half chances came and went but at half time the score remained 0 – 0.

The second half was a much more even affair and sweeper Ben Brown was called upon to make several last ditch tackles. Sheridan was tested with a series of dangerous crosses which were well dealt with. The deadlock was broken with 15 minutes remaining after a flowing move involving Eoin Hamill, Dean Cochrane and Currie. The ball came to substitute Jonny Hoy with his back to goal near the penalty spot. Despite tight marking he made a yard of space, swivelled and struck a powerful shot into the net despite an acrobatic dive by the keeper. Five minutes later he thought he had got his second but he was denied by the woodwork. At the other end Sheridan saved well in tipping a 20 yard shot round the post for a corner. Despite some late pressure from Killen the Mallards saw out the game and will meet Enniskillen Rangers in round 1 on 3rd September.

Ballinamallard 5 - 0 Tempo - 04.06.07

Stand in keeper Adam Davison had a quiet evening as the Mallards dominated possession and created chances galore but wasteful finishing and steady Tempo goalkeeping kept the score to 5 – 0. It took the Mallards 25 minutes to break down a determined defence but Jonny Hoy took his chance well and scored from 15 yards. Just before half time Ryan O’Sullivan received the ball after good work from Hoy and his shot from 25 yards sailed into the net.
The second half continued in the same vein and although Tempo rarely threatened their defence remained solid and the Mallards were struggling to create good chances. Substitute Eoin Hamill came on for the Mallards and within 10 minutes he was given a through ball by the excellent Dean Cochrane and his pace and shot under the goalkeeper made it 3 – 0. Five minutes later it was Chris Sheridan’s through ball that found Hamill and he again finished well. With 5 minutes remaining a powerful Sheridan shot was parried by the keeper but James Turley reacted quickly to score from close in to make the final score 5 - 0.

Fivemiletown 2 – 7 Ballinamallard - 31.05.07

Ballinamallard quickly got into gear with Chris Sheridan in midfield behind most of the attacks and supplying of many of the penetrating passes through the Fivemiletown defence. Good chances were created for Andrew Farrell and John Currie but the opening goal came when a Matthew McConkey pass picked out John Joe Strain and he controlled and score with a left foot shot. Strain added another after a good cross by Farrell and Sheridan made it 3 – 0 with a shot from outside the penalty area. Before half time McConkey scored with another long shot to complete a dominant first half performance.
After the break Strain completed his hat trick with a powerful strike which the keeper got his hands to but was unable to keep out to make the score 5 – 0. Fivemiletown got on the score sheet when a 30 yard shot bounced cruelly in front of keeper Sheridan and into the net. This sparked a mini revival and another goal followed after a mix up in the Mallard’s defence was capitalised on and Sheridan was well beaten. With ten minutes to go Currie got on the score sheet with a chip over the keeper and Jonny Hoy finished the scoring in the dying minutes after good work by Alonso Houlihan to make the final score 7 - 2.

Ballinamallard Youth 7 - 0 Enniskillen Rangers - 28.05.07

The Mallards started quickly and within the first minute John Edgar broke through the defence to slide the ball under the keeper to open the scoring. Rangers almost equalised seconds after the restart but Adam Davison did well to hold onto a powerful shot. The Mallards double the lead on ten minutes following a strong run on the right by John Currie and his cross was met by John Joe Strain who tapped in from close range. Another run and cross from the right by the lively Currie was dispatched by Chris Sheridan to make it 3 – 0. Before the break Matthew McConkey scored with a terrific shot to the top corner after good work by Strain.
After the break Edgar scored his second after breaking from midfield and lobbing the outcoming keeper. The Mallards were in complete control at the stage but Louis Leonard and Ben Brown had to be at their best to control the lively Michael McBride who poised a threat with his pace. McConkey was unlucky when his powerful header from a corner hit the bar and was cleared. Alonso Houlihan scored the fifth and best goal of the game when he latched onto a loose ball 30 yards and his sweet strike sailed into the roof of the net. Edgar completed his hat trick in the final minutes when his shot was parried by the keeper but he reacted quickest to slot the ball home to complete a comfortable 7 – 0 victory that keeps the Mallards on the tail of leaders Lisnaskea.

B’mallard 8 – 0 Dergview - 23.4.07

A one sided game at Ferney Park saw Ballinamallard run out comfortable 8 – 0 winners against Dergview. John Edgar hit the post and Ryan O’Sullivan saw his shot tipped on to the post before the Mallards took the lead on 15 minutes. Andrew Farrell broke the deadlock after rounding the keeper and he quickly scored again after a strong run from midfield. John Edgar completed the first half scoring with a shot from inside the penalty area after a good cross from Chris Sheridan to give B’mallard a 3 – 0 half time lead.
After the break Farrell completed his hat trick when his pace took him past the last defender and he scored with ease. Jonny Hoy scored with a tap in from close range after a cross from Edgar to make it 5 – 0. John Currie got on the score sheet when the keeper parried his shot but he reacted quickest to score into an empty net. The Dergview keeper made a number of good saves in both halves and but for his performance the score would have been in double figures. Farrell and Edgar were to cause Dergview problems all evening and this combination saw the Mallards get the seventh when a through ball by Edgar was controlled by Farrell and he coolly shot past the out coming keeper. Jonny Hoy scored the final goal to make it 8 – 0 with a low curling shot. The game was played in a sporting manner and praise must go to referee Valerie McManus for her part in this.

B’mallard ‘B’ 0 – 6 B’mallard ‘A’ - 16.4.07

Ballinamallard U14’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ met at Ferney park and it was the ‘A’ team who came away with a 6 – 0 victory. The opening 10 minutes was a tight affair with the ‘B’ defence restricting the ‘A’s to long range shots. The breakthrough came after Alonso Houlihan got free on the left of the penalty area and his low cross provided John Currie with a simple tap in at the back post. The second followed after a Chris Sheridan corner was met by Matthew McConkey with a near post header. The ‘B’ team were restricted to breakaways but strong running by Johnny Magwood found him free but his shot from a tight angle was smothered well by Andrew Sheridan. Two minutes before the break Houlihan got on the score sheet with an accurate lob over the keeper from 30 yards to make the half time score 3 - 0.
The second half started with the ‘A’s pressing and the fourth goal came after a McConkey cross was picked up by Jonny Hoy with his back to goal. He swivelled and struck a shot from 20 yards into the corner which gave keeper Gareth Deazley no chance. David Fitzpatrick and Ryan Sandford both gave battling performances at the heart of the ‘B’ defence but neither could stop a fifth from an unstoppable shot by Sheridan from a tight angle. Ronan McDonough on the left and Aaron Little on the right had solid games for the ‘B’ team and the ‘A’s were creating few clear cut chances however with 5 minutes remaining the ‘A’s made it 6 – 0 after a shot from James Turley from outside the area found its way into the net.

M.U. Cup Final Report

Dungannon Utd 2 – 3 Ballinamallard a.e.t.

Ballinamallard took on unbeaten Dungannon Utd in the Mid Ulster Cup final at a windswept Craigavon on Saturday. With the wind at their backs Dungannon started briskly and the opening 10 minutes was played mostly in the Mallards half, with Ben Brown, Dean Cochrane, Louis Leonard, and Adam Davison at the heart of the defence kept busy. With keeper Andrew Sheridan unable to kick into the gale much beyond the 18-yard area the Mallards were under constant pressure and fell behind when a neat passing movement by D’gannon, found a forward free and he rounded keeper Sheridan and slotted into the net for the opening goal. Adam Stockdale at the heart of the Dungannon midfield was the source of many of the attacks as the Mallards continued to struggle. The Mallards were being reduced to the occasional break but both Andrew Farrell and John Joe Strain had half chances but good goalkeeping denied them. Sheridan was by far the busier keeper and pulled of two great saves in quick succession but with half time approaching he was beaten again with a low shot to his right. Dungannon poured forward and midfielders Matthew McConkey and John Edgar were playing at the heart of the defence, winning most of the aerial balls. A succession of D’gannon corners were dealt with but solid and some frantic defending kept the score at 2 – 0 at the break.

The second half was a complete reversal with the Mallards quickly winning two corners and John Currie, Chris Sheridan and Edgar dominating the midfield and creating chances. A neat move involving Currie and Edgar on the edge of the penalty found Sheridan who shifted the ball on to his weaker right side and he unleashed a powerful shot which the keeper got his fingers to but was unable to stop. Adam Davison’s last-ditch tackle on a D’gannon forward saved a certain goal as D’gannon were reducing to the occasional break and Leonard, Brown and Ruairi Corrigan were all called upon as this threat continued. With the Mallards attacking in numbers in search of the equaliser, shots by Sheridan, Farrell and Johnny Hoy all went close but the excellent D’gannon keeper kept everything out. The Mallards had the ball in the net when Edgar passed to Farrell and his terrific first time curling shot to the top corner left beat the keeper but to his dismay the goal was ruled out for offside. With 10 minutes remaining Edgar released Hoy and his run in the penalty area ended when he was scythed down and awarded a penalty. Under immense pressure McConkey coolly took the penalty and thumped the ball past the keeper to equalise to the delight of the travelling supporters. Sensing victory the Mallards won a series of corners and free kicks but efforts from Eoin Hamill, Edgar and Farrell were all blocked and the game went to extra time. The Mallards edged possession but no clear-cut chances were created by either team. With 2 minutes remaining and penalties looming Edgar received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and passed to Hoy who drove the ball low into the corner of the net from 10 yards to spark joyful scenes. The Mallards comfortably saw out the final minutes and captain Ben Brown raised the cup to the cheers of his teammates and the large travelling support to round up an outstanding team performance.
Squad: Hoy, C.Sheridan, Hamill, Currie, A.Sheridan, McConkey, Corrigan, O'Sullivan, Farrell, Edgar, Davison, Cochrane, Strain, Mitten, Leonard, Brown.

M.U. Cup semi-final

Cookstown 1 – 3 Ballinamallard 21.04.07

>

Ballinamallard U 14’s progressed to the final of the Mid Ulster Cup after a hard fought thrilling 3 – 1 victory against Cookstown at Dungannon on Saturday. The Mallards started with a strong wind at their backs and immediately took control with John Edgar and Charlie Mitten in midfield dominating possession. Chris Sheridan on the left and John Currie on the right were a constant threat and Jonny Hoy and John Joe Strain both almost scored in the first 10 minutes from crosses from the flanks. The Cookstown keeper was much the busier in the opening period and he was relieved to see shots from Edgar and Hoy go narrowly wide. The pressure eventually paid on 20 minutes after Mitten won a series of tackles in midfield and laid the ball off to Hoy. He quickly controlled the ball and struck a right foot shot over the Cookstown keeper from the left corner of the penalty area. The Mallards laid siege to the Cookstown goal and won a series of corners, which the defence managed to clear. However it was another dangerous Sheridan corner that gave the Mallards a 2 – 0 lead when Matthew McConkey rose tallest to head into the net despite a brave attempted line clearance by a defender. With just 5 minutes remaining Cookstown had 2 half chances but scuffed shots resulted in Andrew Sheridan having a quiet first half.
Playing into the wind in the second half the Mallards faced the expected onslaught with Cookstown dominating play and it was the turn of Dean Cochrane, Louis Leonard, Adam Davison and McConkey to play key roles at the heart of the defence. Crosses into the penalty area were coming thick and fast but resolute defending and two good Sheridan saves from distance kept Cookstown at bay. With most of the play in the Mallard’s half, lone striker Eoin Hamill was proving a valuable outlet and on numerous occasions he was able to carry the ball into the Cookstown half and relieve the constant pressure. With ten minutes remaining Cookstown deservedly scored when a cross was met by a Cookstown forward who scored with a well taken shot which Sheridan could do nothing about. Cookstown continued to press but on the break Currie, Edgar and Strain were beginning to cause problems. In the dying minutes Cookstown won a series of corners and free kicks but a mixture of good fortune and gallant defending kept them out. With seconds remaining one of these clearances found Edgar in midfield and he quickly released Currie on the right. Faced with a stretched defence his strong run and cross on the right came to Strain who cleverly stepped over the ball. The ball ran to Hamill who struck a left foot shot into the corner of the net to round up a terrific team performance and put the Mallards into the Mid Ulster cup final with this 3 – 1 victory.

Portadown 1 – 2 Ballinamallard - 14.04.07

B’mallard U14’s travelled to Lurgan on Saturday and came away with a 2 – 1 victory after a gritty second half performance against a physical Portadown side. The Mallards started slowly and after 10 minutes found themselves behind after a strike from outside the penalty area somehow found its way into the corner of the net. The lack lustre performance continued with the stronger Portadown team winning most of the 50 / 50 tackles and the Mallards knocked out of their stride. Despite this, keeper Andrew Sheridan was well protected and there were few moments of danger with Louis Leonard, Ben Brown and Ruairi Corrigan coping well. The Mallards had a few chances with shots from Matthew McConkey and John Edgar and John Joe Strain was unlucky when his shot from 10 yards went past the post with the keeper beaten.
Jonny Hoy and Alonso Houlihan came on for the second half and the Mallards immediately got into their stride with Christopher Sheridan and Andrew Farrell masterminding some terrific moves. A series of corners were won but were scrambled away by the Portadown defence and Edgar and Farrell both had shot saved. Despite this pressure it was 15 minutes from the end before the Mallards equalised. A cross into the penalty area was headed away to the corner of the area and retrieved by Edgar. He turned and curled an unstoppable right foot shot into the top corner of the net. Portadown were restricted to breakaways but they almost regained their lead when a sloppy back pass let in a forward but Sheridan came out bravely to drive at his feet and knock the ball out for a corner. With 5 minutes remaining the Mallard thought they had hit the winner when an Edgar shot hit the underside of the bar and bounced near the line, Sheridan followed up but his header also hit the underside of the bar and bounced near the line. Despite strong protests from the players that the ball had crossed the line on both occasions the Portadown referee waved play on. However with only 2 minutes remaining the Mallards scored the winner. Sheridan beat a defender and passed the Strain who took a touch before blasting into the net through a packed defence from 15 yards to give the Mallards the points which they thoroughly deserved after the second half performance.

N.IRELAND BOYS CUP 2006 / 07

Results:

This opening game was played in torrential downpours but there was still some slick passing and good movement for the large crowd. This was a closely contested match and with few chances at either end the half time score of 0 – 0 came as no surprise. With 15 minutes gone in the second half Drogheda scored what turned out to be the only goal after a shot was parried by Andrew Sheridan and a Drogheda forward scored from close range. Both teams had few chances and despite finishing the stronger team B’mallard were unable to snatch an equaliser. Ben Brown had another commanding performance at the back and Andrew Farrell and John Joe Strain both caused problems for the Drogheda defence with their pace. B’mallard keeper Sheridan also had a good game in very difficult conditions.

06.07.05 B’MALLARD U12 1 - 1 COLERAINE F.C. (Group Stage)
The Vale Centre, Greysteel

This was another closely fought match with very little between the sides. In the opening 10 minutes both teams had several half chances, which came to nothing. The opening goal for B’mallard came 15 minutes into the first half when a Christopher Sheridan cross was headed on by Matthew McConkey for Andrew Farrell to score from close range. Louis Leonard and Brian McAleer both had solid games in defence and limited Coleraine to long range shooting. In the second half Coleraine pressed forward and B’mallard were fortunate when a shot struck their post and bounced out. With 10 minutes remaining Coleraine got their deserved equaliser when a free kick was headed past a static defence into the net.

07.07.05 B’MALLARD U12 2 - 2 BIRKIRKARA F.C. (MALTA) (Group Stage)
ST Columbs, Waterside

B’mallard were put under pressure right from the whistle with Birkirkara playing attractive football but being held out by the defensive line of Nathen Keys, Ryan O’Sullivan, Ben Brown and Louis Leonard. The deadlock was broken just before half time when a deflected shot beat Andrew Sheridan. Five minutes into the second half Birkirkara went further ahead when Ben Brown’s mistimed tackle resulted in a penalty. Andrew Sheridan dived to his left and got a hand to the ball but was unable to stop the ball crossing the line. Ronan McDonough, Brian McAleer, Ryan Potter and Scott Byers were all brought on and this seemed to spark a revival and for the first time in the match B’mallard started to play good football. They were rewarded 10 mins. from the end when Brian McAleer hooked the ball into the net from a Christopher Sheridan cross. B’mallard laid siege to the Birkirkara goal and with 3 minutes on the clock Ruairi Corrigan nudged the ball over the line after a fumble from the keeper. Frantic Birkirkara defending somehow kept the score at 2 – 2 and with seconds on the clock John Joe Strain broke free on the left but his left foot shot was well saved by the keeper. Nathen Keys gave a determined performance in this highly entertaining thriller which was played with great spirit by both teams.

07.07.05 B’MALLARD U12 2 - 1 MAIDEN CITY ACADEMY(Q.Final)
Prehen

B’mallard progressed to the quarter final of the Rose Bowl and their opponents in the quarter final were Maiden City Academy. Academy started strongly and Ben Brown and Ryan O’Sullivan were quickly involved making last ditch tackles. After this initial pressure B’mallard got into their stride with James Turley, Owen Hamill, Brian McAleer and Adam Davison linking well and creating chances for Andrew Farrell and John Joe Strain. After 20 minutes Academy took the lead against the run of play when their forward outpaced the B’mallard defence to score past Andrew Sheridan. Minutes later B’mallard were awarded a penalty after Ruairi Corrigan was brought down in the box. Ryan O’Sullivan struck the resulting penalty just wide with the keeper well beaten. The second half began with B’mallard again well on top and were awarded a second penalty after a handball in the box. Matthew McConkey coolly stepped up and scored to level the score. Good midfield passing movement from Johnny Hoy and Adam Davison gave John Joe Strain and Andrew Farrell further chances before Christopher Sheridan scored the deserved winner with a looping shot from outside the box. In the last few minutes Academy poured forward searching for the equaliser but the defence marshalled by Ryan O’Sullivan, who showed great character after the penalty miss held firm.

08.07.05 B’MALLARD U12 1 - 3 DUNDALK (Semi Final)
Greysteel

Another slow start in this semi final saw B’mallard fall behind to a very strong Dundalk side and they can have no complaints about the score. Dundalk dominated the first half and they scored the only goal after a cross from the right was headed in comfortably by a Dundalk striker with the defence looking on. A Matthew McConkey shot that went over the bar was the closest that B’mallard came in a poor first half performance. B’mallard improved in the second half but found themselves 2 – 0 down after a cross was not dealt with and a Dundalk striker had a simple tap in. With 10 minutes remaining and the game seemingly over John Joe Strain picked up the ball in midfield. He began a mazy run which left 3 Dundalk players in his wake and when he got in to the penalty area he unleashed a powerful shot which gave the keeper no chance. This wonder goal inspired B’mallard and they forced 2 free kicks in a matter of minutes outside the Dundalk penalty area, one of which by Christopher Sheridan grazed the crossbar. With B’mallard pouring forward and pressing hard for the equaliser Dundalk broke quickly, outpaced the defence and gave keeper Scott Byers no chance to make the final score 3 - 1.

09.07.05 B’MALLARD U12 0 - 1 LIMAVADY (3rd/4th Play Off)
Templemore

This play off was a game which B’mallard should have won comfortably but poor finishing and a moment of slackness at the back cost them dearly. The opening 10 minutes saw Andrew Farrell and John Joe Strain miss excellent chances. Chance after chance followed as B’mallard played their best football of the tournament but were unable to score. The second half continued in the same vein with Johnny Hoy, Ryan Potter, Matthew McConkey, Brian McAleer and Christopher Sheridan all going close. Defenders Nathen Keys, Louis Leonard, Rauiri Corrigan and Ryan O’Sullivan had a quiet game with most of the play at the other end. With 2 minutes remaining a long clearance from Limavady caught the defence cold and a Limavady player got to the ball before keeper Andrew Sheridan to score an unlikely winner. At the final whistle the boys were understandably gutted at losing a game which they totally dominated.

Comment:
The boys have enjoyed themselves, learned a lot and have played against some of the best U12 teams in Ireland and Europe. Despite the high quality of the opposition no team has overwhelmed us and the boys can leave with their heads held high. In all the matches the result has been in doubt right to the end. Six games in five days is a gruelling schedule but the boys put in tremendous effort and coped very well. It has proved to be a terrific team building exercise and the boys enjoyed the hotel facilities but perhaps story telling at 3am took more out of the boys than the football. Coaches, Paul Sheridan, Fred Potter and myself have also learned a lot from watching the other teams and the variety of tactics used. An offer from our Maltese opponents to enter their home tournament shows the importance of entering tournaments like this and making contacts with other clubs in Ireland and across Europe.
