M.U. Cup Final Report
Dungannon Utd 2 – 3 Ballinamallard a.e.t.
Ballinamallard took on unbeaten Dungannon Utd in the Mid Ulster Cup final at a windswept Craigavon on Saturday. With the wind at their backs Dungannon started briskly and the opening 10 minutes was played mostly in the Mallards half, with Ben Brown, Dean Cochrane, Louis Leonard, and Adam Davison at the heart of the defence kept busy. With keeper Andrew Sheridan unable to kick into the gale much beyond the 18-yard area the Mallards were under constant pressure and fell behind when a neat passing movement by D’gannon, found a forward free and he rounded keeper Sheridan and slotted into the net for the opening goal. Adam Stockdale at the heart of the Dungannon midfield was the source of many of the attacks as the Mallards continued to struggle. The Mallards were being reduced to the occasional break but both Andrew Farrell and John Joe Strain had half chances but good goalkeeping denied them. Sheridan was by far the busier keeper and pulled of two great saves in quick succession but with half time approaching he was beaten again with a low shot to his right. Dungannon poured forward and midfielders Matthew McConkey and John Edgar were playing at the heart of the defence, winning most of the aerial balls. A succession of D’gannon corners were dealt with but solid and some frantic defending kept the score at 2 – 0 at the break.
The second half was a complete reversal with the Mallards quickly winning two corners and John Currie, Chris Sheridan and Edgar dominating the midfield and creating chances. A neat move involving Currie and Edgar on the edge of the penalty found Sheridan who shifted the ball on to his weaker right side and he unleashed a powerful shot which the keeper got his fingers to but was unable to stop. Adam Davison’s last-ditch tackle on a D’gannon forward saved a certain goal as D’gannon were reducing to the occasional break and Leonard, Brown and Ruairi Corrigan were all called upon as this threat continued. With the Mallards attacking in numbers in search of the equaliser, shots by Sheridan, Farrell and Johnny Hoy all went close but the excellent D’gannon keeper kept everything out. The Mallards had the ball in the net when Edgar passed to Farrell and his terrific first time curling shot to the top corner left beat the keeper but to his dismay the goal was ruled out for offside. With 10 minutes remaining Edgar released Hoy and his run in the penalty area ended when he was scythed down and awarded a penalty. Under immense pressure McConkey coolly took the penalty and thumped the ball past the keeper to equalise to the delight of the travelling supporters. Sensing victory the Mallards won a series of corners and free kicks but efforts from Eoin Hamill, Edgar and Farrell were all blocked and the game went to extra time. The Mallards edged possession but no clear-cut chances were created by either team. With 2 minutes remaining and penalties looming Edgar received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and passed to Hoy who drove the ball low into the corner of the net from 10 yards to spark joyful scenes. The Mallards comfortably saw out the final minutes and captain Ben Brown raised the cup to the cheers of his teammates and the large travelling support to round up an outstanding team performance.
Squad: Hoy, C.Sheridan, Hamill, Currie, A.Sheridan, McConkey, Corrigan, O'Sullivan, Farrell, Edgar, Davison, Cochrane, Strain, Mitten, Leonard, Brown.
M.U. Cup semi-final Cookstown 1 – 3 Ballinamallard 21.04.07
Playing into the wind in the second half the Mallards faced the expected onslaught with Cookstown dominating play and it was the turn of Dean Cochrane, Louis Leonard, Adam Davison and McConkey to play key roles at the heart of the defence. Crosses into the penalty area were coming thick and fast but resolute defending and two good Sheridan saves from distance kept Cookstown at bay. With most of the play in the Mallard’s half, lone striker Eoin Hamill was proving a valuable outlet and on numerous occasions he was able to carry the ball into the Cookstown half and relieve the constant pressure. With ten minutes remaining Cookstown deservedly scored when a cross was met by a Cookstown forward who scored with a well taken shot which Sheridan could do nothing about. Cookstown continued to press but on the break Currie, Edgar and Strain were beginning to cause problems. In the dying minutes Cookstown won a series of corners and free kicks but a mixture of good fortune and gallant defending kept them out. With seconds remaining one of these clearances found Edgar in midfield and he quickly released Currie on the right. Faced with a stretched defence his strong run and cross on the right came to Strain who cleverly stepped over the ball. The ball ran to Hamill who struck a left foot shot into the corner of the net to round up a terrific team performance and put the Mallards into the Mid Ulster cup final with this 3 – 1 victory.
Portadown 1 – 2 Ballinamallard - 14.04.07
B’mallard U14’s travelled to Lurgan on Saturday and came away with a 2 – 1 victory after a gritty second half performance against a physical Portadown side. The Mallards started slowly and after 10 minutes found themselves behind after a strike from outside the penalty area somehow found its way into the corner of the net. The lack lustre performance continued with the stronger Portadown team winning most of the 50 / 50 tackles and the Mallards knocked out of their stride. Despite this, keeper Andrew Sheridan was well protected and there were few moments of danger with Louis Leonard, Ben Brown and Ruairi Corrigan coping well. The Mallards had a few chances with shots from Matthew McConkey and John Edgar and John Joe Strain was unlucky when his shot from 10 yards went past the post with the keeper beaten. Jonny Hoy and Alonso Houlihan came on for the second half and the Mallards immediately got into their stride with Christopher Sheridan and Andrew Farrell masterminding some terrific moves. A series of corners were won but were scrambled away by the Portadown defence and Edgar and Farrell both had shot saved. Despite this pressure it was 15 minutes from the end before the Mallards equalised. A cross into the penalty area was headed away to the corner of the area and retrieved by Edgar. He turned and curled an unstoppable right foot shot into the top corner of the net. Portadown were restricted to breakaways but they almost regained their lead when a sloppy back pass let in a forward but Sheridan came out bravely to drive at his feet and knock the ball out for a corner. With 5 minutes remaining the Mallard thought they had hit the winner when an Edgar shot hit the underside of the bar and bounced near the line, Sheridan followed up but his header also hit the underside of the bar and bounced near the line. Despite strong protests from the players that the ball had crossed the line on both occasions the Portadown referee waved play on. However with only 2 minutes remaining the Mallards scored the winner. Sheridan beat a defender and passed the Strain who took a touch before blasting into the net through a packed defence from 15 yards to give the Mallards the points which they thoroughly deserved after the second half performance.
